My new son had a greeny brown vomit this morning which alarmed the midwife. They did an X-ray to see if he had a twisted gut now they are keeping him on a drip for 24 hrs in an incubator.

I can't bear it. I'm allowed to cuddle him if he cries but not feed him. Just about to hand express to keep my supply up. My milk hasn't come in yet but he did loads of sucking since he was born so I'm thinking I 'll have loads of milk.

I was going to post here last night as he.was trying to feed from 9pm to 4am and getting more and more agitated and angry. Finally at 4am I allowed midwife to give mil of formula. He wanted more and she wanted to give more but at only one day old I thought that would be enough. He finally settled at 6am then at 9am threw up what I assumed to be formula. But the greeny brown colour alarmed midwife.

Just wondered if anyone has any similar stories that can reassure me?!

Hi I don't have any info to reassure you, but didn't want to leave your post unanswered. I think it's an important time for establishing your milk supply, and you'll produce very valuable colostrum (possibly dodgy spelling-apologies), SO... I suspect you should be expressing with a pump and storing any (even tiny amounts) milk you express to give to your baby in his recovery. I don't know anything about twisted gut, but breast milk is very very easy to digest so once your son can have fluids orally I think it's important he should have your colostrum. I think you need to insist the hospital get you a Lactation consultant or similar to advise you specifically about this as overlooking something now may mean your supply suffers or your son misses out on all that valuable first milk, which will be so important, especially as it looks like he's having a bit of a rough start. Best of luck.
