Oversupply at night

Hoping someone can help me!

Overnight my right boob seems to go into overdrive. If I try and feed DD off it in the middle of the night the let down is too fast and DD seems to drown! As a result I feed off the left only at night which results in a very uncomfy right by the morning. I then express when I get up, normally between 6 and 8oz.

Does anyone have any tips on reducing this without causing other issues?

Hiya,
How old is DD?
Sorry, I don't really have any helpful advice but I did have the same problem though. I had it equally badly with both boobs so just had to keep feeding. DD solved the problem herself by getting quicker at eating!

How old is dd?

I had this for around 10 weeks (a lot of people said it would ease up around 6/7 weeks but it didn't!) I just had a good supply but I did read these tips on Kelly mom it helped as I did have a forceful let down and dd would pull off and splutter. Eventually she learnt to inhale her milk as it came out so fast, she didn't have a choice!

I had this with both my boys as babies. I would recommend encouraging her to feed from the full breast. Nature sorts itself out, if you don't express your body will keep supplying out of demand therefore the more you express the more milk you produce.

Just have plenty of clean muslin squares handy Wink x

Thank you everyone, I will try tonight feeding from both sides, and not express in the morning and we'll see what happens.

Fingers crossed for happy boobs in the morning!!

I've had this, got this. I really wouldn't avoid feeding that side for too long, I did and ended up in agony for about 2days ending with a weird, blood blister/spot thing on the middle of my nipple. Just feed alternate sides as you would in the day and it will even out eventually.

I used to express a tiny amount of the foremilk off for my ds to enable him to drink properly. It really wasn't much (less than an oz), but was enough to stop the spurting.

Oh and DD is 11 weeks. This problem only started about 10days ago.

My DD is 5 months now and this hasn't happened for a few weeks. I dont remember quite when it got better - around 3 1/2 months or so i finally started feeling like we had got the hang of breastfeeding and supply/demand had stabilised - so it was probably around then.

Thank you for all the help. DD woke at 3:30 for her night feed last night (having gone down at 10:30) feed her off the right first, she coughed through it a bit but I stuck with it. When she came off after about 10mins, I changed her then put her on the left, she was slept within 5mins but both boobs were ok this morning.

As you have suggested I just have to stick it out and resist pumping until it settles out again.

You MN ladies are fab Smile
