Need to stop BF 29wk old due to pain but don't know how

Hoping for any suggestions as a bit stuck with what to do next. Need to stop due to pain but there seems to be little alternative.

I have a 21 week old and BF is still painful! Due to 3 tongue tie cuts - last one 6 weeks ago and despite a good latch from my end but it seems she still does not bring her tongue fully forward esp when feeding on the right!

Currently recovering from 3 weeks of constant mastitis and also have thrush from the vast amount of antibiotics needed to clear the major infection.

We have been trying a bottle since 6 weeks and now she does accept it but she has no clue what to do with it so rarely takes any. Similarly with sippy cup and open cup.

Have also retried nipple shields to try and encourage her bottle feeding but she refuses to feed.

Hello again - just replied to you on other thread! Sorry I'm not much use as the pain from bf with (then) undiagnosed tt was decreasing by the time I was at 21w, so I have been able to stick with it and don't have any advice re giving up.

Are you treating the thrush? You need topical for your nipple, drops or oral gel for DD, and almost certainly tablets (fluconazole) for you too. Also def worth taking a probiotic now if you're not already. And boil-washing bras and bedding. Apols if I'm telling you things you already know. Blush I found great relief in super-hot baths and olive oil.

Cranial osteopathy, although it didn't by any means fix the problem, really helped with DS's latch. I think it helped him move his jaw a bit more. I know some people are sceptical but the difference for me was amazing.

Lots of sympathy and major kudos for getting this far. I hope you're painfree asap.

I have gel for her and cream for me. Waiting for antibiotics to stop before deciding to use fluconozole again!

Have tried cranial and her latch us better but not enough to stop my pain!

Just plain old olive oil on nipples? Haven't tried that but they feel tlike they need something to soothe them!

Hoping the pain eases soon or she takes a bottle we try every day!

sorry if you've tried this but have you tried using the breastflow bottles? i haven't tried myself but apparently bf babies tend to accept them easier.

Thanks nancy I have tried breast flow and she won't take them either!

Ah that's rubbish for you. I was gonna buy one to try on my dtg who often refuses evening bottle.

Have you made any progress?

McBaby · 08/01/2013 07:24

Very little progress. She no longer screams at the bottle and tries to take it and manages the odd oz but not enough for a full feed!

I have heard good things about breast flow so I would try it out as it does work for some people.

Re the thrush when i had it reoeatedly i washed my nipples and aerola after esch feedd with a solution of bicarb and cooled boiled water. It helped as it discourages the growth ofvtge thrush.

Nancy54 · 08/01/2013 10:22

Well at least she's trying to take it and not screaming!! well done, that's some progress at least!

Sounds like you've had a really horrendous time of it - well done for getting so far with the bfing!

Hopefully she'll start taking it soon.
