Pain after breastfeeding

My DD is now 16 weeks and I have started to experience pain in my breast after feeding her. It's as if someone is stabbing me with a sewing needle, mainly around the nipple area. I've had a bit of trouble with blocked milk ducts lately - could this be related? If anyone has any idea what the problem could be or what I could do to ease the pain (which seems worse after the night feed)I'd be grateful. Thanks, PJ

I get it too, it doesn't last long but it hurts. I expect I shall be contradicted by more experienced BF's but I don't think its to do with blocked ducts, cos I haven't got that (or if I have, I don't know about it) I mentioned it to my HV who said it wasn't uncommon but didn't seem concerned - but then its not her being stabbed! I THINK thrush can cause stabbing pains, and I think I have had a bit of that recently

Could it be thrush? Have a look in her mouth and see if there are any white patches. Does she use a dummy? Have you been on antibiotics recently? If yes, then it may well be thrush and you would both need treated.
It could still be a blocked duct - massage your breast towards the nipple whilst feeding to make sure it empties.
There is info on thrush here

Thanks for all your help. The HV checked DD's mouth and has ruled out thrush. I think it could be a positioning problem, I suppose after 4 months we might have got a bit sloppy so have gone back to ensuring "tummy to mummy" and this has helped (although not at 6.30 am this morning!)
