Does this sound ok for a 9 month old?

DS is now 9mo and bf. I introduced solids at 24 weeks (mix of spoon feeding and finger foods not BLW) and he took to it like a duck to water. From what I recall, the first 4 weeks he still had a lot of milk, and he's slowly cut down on BF.

I've never really had a routine with him - he's just been bf on demand, and this was fine until about 3-4 weeks ago but he's so prone to filling up on solids that I think in order to preserve my supply (I'm planning on feeding until 1 year or beyond) I need to be a bit more regimented and 'strategic' with BF now. For the past couple of weeks he's only had 1-2 'proper' feeds (by this I mean feeding for 5 mins and me feeling a let down and hearing him guzzle) and then 2-3 snack feeds (few sucks here and there for 2-3 mins) per day.

I'm now planning on BF before each meal, and then offering BF as a snack if I think he needs it. Does this sound ok? I figure it's the only way I'll be able to ensure he still gets enough milk. I think he still has had enough over the past few weeks - I think he front loads at that first 7am feed where he has both sides and guzzles for 10 mins. He also doesn't seem to want to feed at all at bedtime, is this ok? So many people I know do a last BF before bed, but DS just doesn't seem interested.

Hi there,
I used to have a similar worry about my Dd when she started solids. I really didn't want to inadvertently wean her early, so I followed the advice on the Kellymom website and always tried to breastfeed before solids whilst she was under 12 months:

kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/solids-how/

I read somewhere that an hour before solids is a good time. Although I ended up getting quite anxious about it and worried rather a lot if I didn't feel she'd breastfeed enough. I wish I'd relaxed a bit more as I don't think a day of slightly less feeding will have a huge long term effect. I think supply is well established at this stage (and Dd is still going strong at 18 months Xmas Smile)

Not sure about the breastfeed before bed but I'm sure that if he's having a good few feeds during the rest of the day, It's fine to go with the flo and not worry about a bedtime feed! Sounds like you're doing very well.

Thank you - I just hadn't anticipated DS to get quite so stuck in to food - he can eat enormous quantities of things!
