lact8 - is the course you are doing for leadership ? What will your role be when you finish your course ? I would love to help on LLL helplines, is that a possibility after doing the course you are doing, or will I have to become a leader first ?

Cristina, what a pain in ar*e for you! Just found out that my friends dp won't be able to give us a lift tomorrow so I won't be going (3 buses if I go by public transport so I'd have to leave at the crack of dawn!) But as soon as I can I'll get some info for you.

Koolkat, my role will be to offer support to mums either over the phone, in their home, at drop in group or at the hospital. So you would be able to do telephone advise if you did this course. I'd say to contact your Health visitor and see if they are running anything like it? If not, let me know where you are and I'll ask when I ask for cristina. (should get extra brownie points for recruiting!!!Smile

lact8 - thanks I used to be a LLL member and they told me you can't do phone help unless you are a leader - so I am puzzled why they said that ?

I am in London. Thanks let me know when you find out !

V interesting article.

Particularly the statistics. I agree that there should be more images in the public domain of mums breastfeeding.

The course sounds like the Peer Counsellor Programme to me which was pioneered by La leche league. They train health visitors who in turn train volunteers to be mother supporters.Where i live we have a 'Baby Cafe' in a local community centre in a Sure Start area which is targeting younger mothers and not so well off mothers. There are quite a few Baby Cafes around the country now.
I agree with what the article said about younger mums seeing breastfeeding as restricting. If i had had kids in my early twenties i doubt i would have breastfed as i liked to party too much, drink and smoke.Ithink people believe the myth that boobs will get saggy after b/f too which for body conscious teens/twentysomethings would be off putting.
I am involved in the local La leche group here and we do get a mix of mums coming although it is predominately middle class and older mums.

think the idea about tv adverts and posters featuring young mums is a great idea
