5 weeks & vomiting after breast feeds

Just a wee question - my LO is 5 weeks and likes to suck, which is fine! He's putting on weight well and cluster feeds in the evening - again, fine by me! After cluster feeding in the evening though as i'm feeding him off to sleep, he quite often vomits large quantities of milk back up. He isnt sick at any other time of day. Is it possible for him to drink more milk than his tummy can cope with just because he likes to suck to get off to sleep? I have tried to give him a dummy which he spits straight back out. Would it be a good idea to persist with the dummy or just accept he's going to be more sicky in the evenings?

Mine did exactly the same thing - just greedy! He settled down over time. I wouldn't worry if he seems happy. Just stock up on the muslins Smile

When my, then little one, was bringing milk up was sometimes from wind, so maybe try winding him by holding him right up and gently robbing his back, tapping doesn't particularly work better, simply the right up position should be enough. A second reason babies bring milk up is reflux where the little valve above their stomach doesn't close as well as later on in their little life so food can travel up and down sometime. Reflux gets better as the baby grows, I would not worry about it if he manages to keep some food down. Simple ways to try to keep food down is gravity, ie place a couple of tins under the two top legs of the cot, this should help. If baby has reflux, baby gaviscon is something worth trying. Have a chat with midwife better a gp.

All the best

Ah that's great thanks. Very reassuring! He doesn't seem unhappy with it so i'll just stock up on muslins as you say.....

I was about to post something similar, I though breastfed babies didn't over eat?
My dd2 does this a lot but not limited to evenings, I know it's not wind because we have winded her from day one (learnt from DD1 and the fact that I have an evil fast letdown) but recently it's got worse and she will not sleep a lot of the time unless its being fed to sleep, even upon waking after a mammoth feed she insists on the boob to go back to sleep and then she will vomit and go back off to sleep - nightmare as she then needs a whole outfit change.
Please help its driving me insane and she's really struggling sleeping bless her (and this weather isn't the best for drying all the clothes I'm currently washing)

I know, I thought that breast fed babies couldn't over feed too. Sorry, no advice, just sympathy!

It's not that they don't overeat, it's that you can't overfeed them. They overeat all the time!
