Hi, just wondering if there is a vegetarian formula? Am currently breastfeeding but would like to have the option of formula milk when weaning. Used to use Hipp with my older children but see it now contains fish :(

I looked when pregnant and the only one I found was Wysol

Hipp is fishy???? Gross!

Well I guess at least mine won't drink from abottle...

Once they are 6 months old you can gie them regular cows milk btw, as long as it isn't replacing all bf/ formula feeds ( until 1 year). So you could give them say cows milk with lunch as a drink as long as they are still having a couple of Bf in the day

Haven't tried it myself, but i believe this is the only one, unless you use goats formula or soy (which you should consult a dr about first).

You really shouldn't use goats or soy milk formula.

A quick scan only shows that none of the normal brands are vegetarian. Genuinely surprised by this.

Would expressing be an option for you if you're set on avoiding non-veggie formulas?

Loislane78 · 26/11/2012 18:54

I thought cow's milk was a no no until they're 1?

5madthings · 26/11/2012 18:59

cows milk is fine in food/cooking ftom 6mths but not as a main drink, they should have breast milk or formula until one and bfeeding is recomended until two years.

SirBoobAlot · 26/11/2012 19:06

Cows milk doesn't contain enough calories to substitute breast or formula milk, and is also high in sodium. Okay to cook with from six months, but not as a drink until over one.

puzzletree · 26/11/2012 19:56

Well there's no great urgency to wean him off breastmilk. I just like being able to give a cup of formula as an alternative to breastfeeding as they get older, and also in the past found it useful to add to foods. Have never got on with expressing really. My children and partner aren't actually vegetarian, just me. But I like to start the children on vegetarian foods (and share foods where possible) and the idea of fish in milk makes me feel queasy. So we can get the fishy stuff, but it's still a shame there isn't an easily available vegetarian formula.

I did use goats formula with ds2 but only because he got an exzema-like rash when we used cows milk formula, usually had bottles of expressed milk at nursery and only very occasionally needed a bottle of formula if we ran out of breast milk. So hardly at all, really! And IIRC, soy formula smells vile, can't imagine it tastes nice.

forevergreek · 26/11/2012 21:26

Yes exactly, if there's rush then cows regular milk is fine for cooking and you can give as odd bottle if mainly feeding bf. ie, if you needed to go out and partner left at home from 6 months it's fine to do say one feed a couple of times a week with regular milk
