reflux versus colic?

Im pretty sure DD2 (11 days) has reflux. But I have some questions.

Can it develop slowly ie not be from birth, developing later on?

If its worse in the evening and practically non existent during the day does that point more towards colic?

Will my GP take me seriously?

Shes on formula. I have another thread about her feeding, but now those issues seem to make sense if it is reflux. I feel so helpless. I cant take the pain away :(

Shameless bump. The only way she will sleep is upright on me. I think its going to be a long night.

I tried tilting one end of the moses basket mattress but she was in it all of 30 seconds before the wriggling started and the crys came :(

Theres not much else to do is there?

I am having similar issued with DD (7 weeks.) Fine during the day. Sleeps most of the afternoon and evening but after feeds after midnight she wakes screaming within 30 mins. Brings up wind fine but is often a bit sick and at times very sick.

I think it can come on after birth, yes, but am no expert! Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon but I share your pain!

Its horrible isnt it! She fed loads tonight and I just kept giving her as much as she wanted. But I fear it made her worse and then she brought the whole lot up at once. She hates the dummy too.

Have you been to the doc? How are you coping?

I have seen the HV who says it is not reflux, could be colic. I started infacol 3 days ago and last night was better but tonight not going great. However she slept amazingly deeply from 2:30-8:30 so probably isn't that tired now, and the smallest thing could be waking her.

I feed as much as she wants, she falls asleep while bfing and then wakes screaming; this can even happen when she is asleep on me, though more normal crying rather than full on screaming.

I cope by trying to sleep when she goes. I go to bed early when I can eg 8pm or before, and try to nap during the day. I get DH to take her downstairs and have her in the early morning eg 5am as that is when he wakes. She is starting to take a bottle of breast milk so that is helping. If my DH had normal sleep patterns I would get him to stay up and have her downstairs and give her a feed at around 10:30, so I could sleep from early bedtime til her next feed at around 1am. Do you have anyone who can help like that?

I have also been known to kick DH out so I can have her in bed and feed her lying down while I doze off, but obviously not possible if she is bottle fed.

It is hard but I am surprised by how well I can cope on little sleep actually. Do try the gp - get your concerns noted and if things develop you are already in the system iyswim.

Yes, I am making an appointment with GP first thing monday. My MW is coming tomorrow to redo heel prick but I know she will fob me off with yet more differing advice so I am tempted to not even mention it to her.

I have DP here and he would help in the ways you have said, but her feeds are so unpredictable it wouldnt really work. Plus she settles better for me. He is staying up with me keeping me company though.

I have infacol here but read online it can make reflux worse so I am reluctant to risk it. Shes finally settled on her back on my lap so sleep in the bed should be possible. Its just the unknown with the feeds that is getting me. She vomited so much and has only had 60ml since that I am worried she hasnt had enough. She isnt pooing either, last poo was thurs.

She has plenty of wet nappies though so Im taking that as reassurance that shes not dehydrated.

Had a lovely MW here today so I said to her about the reflux and she agreed that it does sound like thats what it is. She told me to try the infacol so we are trying it today. So glad that I wasnt fobbed off!

She seemed happy enough that the doc would give gaviscon so hopefully I wont have too many problems!

Hello. My lo was diagnosed with reflux at 13 weeks. Some tips- keep upright for 20 -30 mins after each feed. Even the night ones. I used dr brown bottles which seemed to help. She was put on a special formula enfamil ar which seemed to work really well. If you think it is I suggest going to the docs if it becomes difficult to feed you lo. They might be able to prescribe you something. Good luck.

Thanks :)

We have been keeping her upright after feeds today and this evening she is like a different baby compared to last night.

We think the infacol might have helped a bit too. But I am still going to go to the docs because I hate seeing her in pain and I want to catch it now before she starts associating feeds with pain.
