Bf - take two. Newborn questions

Bf failed with dc1 after just a couple of weeks. Would really like it to work with dc2 (born today) and plan to make the most of the fab advice on this board. Can you help w these initial Qs:

He's fed twice today (20mins each), but from the same boob. Neither of us could figure out the second boob the second time. Is this ok or will I be lopsided?

My milk hasn't come in yet. How do I know he's actually getting some colustrum? I could see it the first feed, but not the second.

Had a c-section. Is it ok to keep on the painkillers or will they affect him through the milk?

It's not hurting so is it working? Was bloody agony w dc1 do feels odd that he's just tucking in.

That's it for day one. Am sure will have a load more Qs tomorrow!

Rarely, hope today is going well and how lovely to have a brand new baby :)

You really, really, need to speak to the midwives about painkillers and the other questions, too. Having said that, painkillers after a section are normally fine and do not affect the baby through the milk.

You will not be lopsided after a couple of feeds on one side.
Your milk would not be in yet - usually takes 3-5 days. You don't need to see the colostrum (how would you see it?).

It absolutely does not need to hurt to work.

Get the midwives to explain how you know he is having milk - they may have the 'what's in a nappy?' factsheet to give you.

Thank you for such reassurance.
Will ask mws too, but it's one of those joyous postnatal ward nights with too many mummies and not enough mws. The ones I have seen/buzzed for are great, luckily.

Firstly congratulations!

I second going back to midwives/support worker for advice and rl support.

However fwiw my experience;
I was worried that DS wasn't feeding during the first day/night so we went back to the mlu and had him checked over. They asked about nappies etc and tested his blood sugar and all was well. Turns out newborns take really really tiny amounts - I was expecting great guzzling feeds from te start.
I never experienced pain during feeding. Occasionally slightly uncomfortable during let down once my milk came in but not agony.

But basically keep asking for help for you and DS2 until you're happy and confident that it's working.
