Night-time boobs ready to burst

JennyH11 · 30/03/2006 17:31

My little un is 11 weeks old and just starting to sleep for up to 8 hours a night. The problem is my full to bursting boobs wake me up after around 6 hours and I'm not sure what to do to relieve the pain. I've been expressing a little on both sides to try and take the edge off while waiting for baby to wake up but that only gives very temporary relief and I'm reluctant to express lots of milk in case this keeps up the milk production. It seems daft to me to wake a sleeping baby as I'm obviously encouraging her to sleep through. In the end last night I tried to feed baby while she was asleep but only succeeded in waking her up and then had an hour of trying to get her back to sleep.
Any ideas on what to do for the best?
Many thanks

The best advice i can give is to say stick with it - your body will adjust accordingly and it will settle. They will still be full in the morning, but not as painful.

Great for your that your LO is sleeping 8 hours at night Smile

Agree with VVVwatever - I was waking up with really sore boobs, waiting for the baby to wake up, but it only lasted a couple of nights before my body adjusted - i found a warm flannel did relieve them a little bit - stick with it

Same here - only took a few days to adjust. Also try sleeping with your arm under you to stop your boobs from feeling the full impact of the mattress!

Apparently cabbage leafs help. Put them in your bra. Al;though I must admid when I tried it in this situation it didn't seem to make much difference. Still, a good story to tell your baby later, all the things you do for them eh

I found the cabbage leaf thing brilliant! You have to put them in the fridge for a while, so they are very cold, but, oh, the relief!!!

Also echo the other posts here that your body will adjust over the next few days Smile

I had to sleep with my bra lined with several flannels to cope with this. Not that DD2 slept for 8 hours, but as soon as she slept longer than 3 hours I was like this!

Hiya
There is also the 12 week BIG growth spurt coming up so expressing enough to provide relief shouldn't be an issue at all in terms of supply.

Your body will adjust in a couple of days, but until then I'd go with expressing a little bit. Could you hand express to reduce the level of stimulation your boobs are getting? When I was like this, I'd only have to take my bra off, stroke downwards towards the nipple, and think of ds crying, and the milk would stream out!
