Antibotics - do they water the milk down at all?

does anyone know?

DS is 5 weeks old tomorrow and i've got a bit of an infection/blocked duct on my right side (the good one) dr's given me 7 days of antibotics (today we're day 2.5) but DS has been v unsettled - he's fgeeding every 2 hours for an hour - and still wants more, I was wondering if the antibotics are watering the milk down. i'm feeding him for 1/2 hour from both sides - and boobs are killing now, any ideas?

if ot is waterin it down any ideas as to how to make it a bit stronger if that's possible? i've given him 1oz of formula tonight to see if that will settle him for a bit loinger - he was until yesterday a settled baby. (well more so) not sure I can coope with another 4 days of 2 hourly feeds for an hour + each time.

hi Munz

Well done on getting this far! The first few weeks are really tough going - i found it a huge shock. Try to make sure you aren't doing too much else and have peope look after you whenever you can.

Am not sure about how exactly anti-biotics effect milk production, but have never heard of them watering it down. I was prescribed them for a post section infection when my DD was about 4 weeks. they made her a little unsettled and windy - which i was warned might happen. The feeding you describe sounds like a bit of a growth spurt - and to be honest DD fed more than that in the early days - for the first few weeks i used to get about an hours break in the evenings! All this early feeding really helps to establish your milk supply. If you are sore it might be worth getting your latch checked. And if you want to carry on feeding its worth trying to hold off the formula, as this might reduce your milk production (i know this is hard if you are worried or really tired).

Is there someone who can take DS for a walk for an hour while you have a break - they often settle for longer periods on the move .

I'm no expert on breast feeding - hopefully someone with a little more knowledge will post soon to reassure you. Hope LO is more settled for you today and you are feeling much better soon :)

thanks hon, he did rather well last night - fed at 10.30, 2.30 and 5.45 so nothing majorly bad (only fed for 1/2 hour each time)

i'm not keen on giving him formula, the worrying thing was after being on my boob for an hour earlier in the night he then took another 1oz of EBM b4 settaling to sleep for an hour.

typically the milk has been good and hes been v settled - he's pout on 2oz the first 2 weeks 11oz on week 3 1lb on week 4 then 9oz this last week, so normally there's no problems.

off to get some more cream I think as i've been using less each time so that might be an issue.

No, they don't water the milk down :) Nothing will do that.

It is about the right time for a growth spurt. I can't remember which weeks they occur at (on average!) but I thought around 6 weeks was one of them.

Please don't give formula, it won't help your production, and may well make your baby more unsettled.

He may not be extra-hungry, he may just be a bit unsettled. Babies are sometimes like this. It will pass.

Are you sleeping with him? That way you can feed and sleep at the same time, maybe?

no we don't slep together - well I bring him into the bed once DH is out of it about 6.30 am for a cuddles. I'm not keen on the feeding whilst in bed sleeping idea incase I roll onto him. besides which I find it a struggle to feed him in bed.

from the formula he spat most of it back up again - he def knows what mummy's milk tastes like which is good - and tbh i'm glad he's not liking the formula. althou we do also give him EBM as well.
