What's your definition of blotto?
I never did the pump 'n dump thing and often b/fed after a few (probably a bottle max over a long evening with a lot of food.)

MummyToToby · 29/03/2006 22:52

well the last time i was drunk before getting PG i had drunk 3/4 of a bottle of wine, 5 cocktails, a vodka and coke and a WKD. i was pretty blotto after that and finished drinking at about 2-ish.

You'll probably find you get blotto quicker anyway LOL! I'm with moondog - never did the pump and dump thing, probably not had very much more than one bottle of wine then next bf around 6.30am (finished drinking around 10pm)

No point in pumping and dumping - the milk gets rid of alcohol because it diffuses back into the bloodstream when not used. I give a reference for this somewhere on mumsnet - search archives.

You can work out when you are totally alcohol free by calculating the time it takes for the body to process a unit of alcohol (about an hour and a half but this varies with body type)....or you can factor in age of baby (a newborn you might think differently about compared to say, a five month old) and your attitude (relaxed or nervous!).

You could express in advance of going out, so the baby has alcohol-free milk when you are out or waiting to be sober....on the other hand, you might decide the whole palaver of expressing or counting units or worrying is not worth it. Up to you :)

do i need to pump and dump though to keep up my supply and prevent discomfort?cos say i didn't feel the baby should take my milk til the afternoon, quite a few feeds would have been missed.

confession time i was bf 10 week old dd gave her 10pm feed after a couple of glasses of wine then proceeded to get totally rat arsed as i knew she would sleep through the night except she wanted feeding at 6am and half asleep i fed her and the next day she was such a happy little soul and slept really well for naps and bedtime went through 12 hours!!! not to be recommended though i still feel guilty 2 years later even though it doesnt seem to have done her any harm!

Racers · 30/03/2006 20:48

aw nulcat I wouldn't worry!

Racers · 30/03/2006 20:49

sorry nulnulcat - 2 glasses of wine and I can't read!

nulnulcat · 30/03/2006 20:55

racers it was more than 2 glasses of wine!! me and brother and wife between us drank 4 bottles of wine and a litre of vodka! but i didnt know i was pregnant til 14 weeks so i was drinking a fair amount up to then including a drunken hen weekend in dublin! so i figured she is used to having alcohol in her bloodstream!

nulnulcat · 30/03/2006 20:55

she gives her dolls wine! in toy wine glasses! for breakfast!!!!!!!!!!!!

Racers · 30/03/2006 21:15

no I've have 2 glasses of wine, that's how I got yer name wrong LOL Grin

tiktok · 30/03/2006 23:31

You may need to pump for comfort (why dump, though, unless you have no way of storing safely?) - will protect supply as well though with well-established bf, not necessary

cataloguequeen · 31/03/2006 02:26

I never did not give the boob after drinking but then I hadn't for so long that 2 glasses would get me very tipsy!!Smile I think you'll be fine... you can always express like you said and it can be frozen too.Wink

ghosty · 31/03/2006 02:31

It took very little to make me blotto when breastfeeding ....
In fact it takes very little now anyway ... I am a very cheap date Grin

arfissimeau · 31/03/2006 03:02

If I was planning on drinking I'd express & store for the early feed the next day. I'd only ever have one or two though because DD would be up at 5am the next day anyway. I didn't ever pump & dump although if I'd had a huge amount I would have.

Coolmama · 01/04/2006 10:23

You will probably find that you will be way too tired to go out and party the night away in the first few months anyway! - I had the same idea, but could never last past 10pm so never got blotto! - (DH says I was a really cheap date for a while). I was one of the lucky ones with enough milk for half the neighbourhood, so donated a lot of it and all I would do was pump and dump before bed, first, because it was a comfort thing ~(otherwise would wake up with these huge, aching, leaking boobs) and also, just made me feel a bit more reassured. I had enough stored so that if I woke up in the morning feeling a little off-colour, I gave the first feed of EBM and then BF as normal later. I fugured that if I was not doing well, then chaces were that the milk I had made overnight would probably taste.... interesting..? Supply was fine and DS, who is nearly 14 months now, is fine too.

monkeytrousers · 01/04/2006 10:54

I pumped and dumped out of ignorance and guilt after having even on glass of wine. I did become less paranoid after a while though.

I don't think it's a good idea to breatsfeed at all though if you're 'completely blotto' to be honest. And after having a baby, hangovers, no sleep and early mornings just don't mix - so the hangovers have to go.
