DD won't stop crying after feed.

Our DD is now 5 weeks old and has been breast fed from the start.
For the last day or two she has become extremely restless during and after feeds so she crys for an hour or two, sleeps 10 mins, is alert and quite for another 10 mins as she fills her nappy and then demands food.
This cycle pretty much repeats itself constantly for the last couple of days where before she was pretty good with a regular 3-4 hour feed and 5 hour break at night. We were originally using just Infacol for the last couple of weeks. For the last week we've also added in Gripe Water.
All our 'tricks' which normally work for calming her when crying don't really work anymore until near the end of her crying when she's already exhausted. Any suggestions greatly recieved!

Maybe she's finding it painful just before she poos??

normal · 28/03/2006 21:08

She poo's without problems when she wakes up before feeding. It's once she's had the first part of her feed that the problems start.

Do you think she gets to drink enough milk?

normal · 28/03/2006 21:50

I think so. She drinks for a good length of time and the flow is good. She's also nearly 5kg and growing so I guess something's going inside and staying.

How about thrush in the mouth? That can be very painful and if she's crying during feeds perhaps this is it. Are there white spots in her mouth? Or a white covering which looks like milk but doesn't come off when rubbed?

It could be thrush even without these symptoms. How are your nipples? Itchy?

If yoiu suspect thrush you and your dd will need to be treated. (You with cream and her with drops on the tongue). It's quite effective and quick as long as it's on the nipples and not inside the ducts. (You'd know about that believe me Shock)

HTH.

Both are getting treatment for thrush though she has no visible signs in her mouth, she's still getting some oral gel as well.

5 weeks is a pretty classic time for symptoms of reflux to start showing themselves. I'd perhaps think about this - does she seem more comfortable held upright after a feed? Maybe ditch the infacol and the gripe water as well, they clearly aren't helping at the moment and in fact they may be making her uncomfortable. Get rid of them for at least 3 days if possible (Infacol takes a while to get out of the system), and think about whether she might be refluxy. If so, take her to the GP and see if a bit of gaviscon or something might help her?
good luck

I found that week 5 very demanding, but things eased up after week 6 with ds1 and 2.
does she have a dummy? I gave ds1 one at 6 weeks and that helped alot as he wanted to constantly suck my boobies, but was then throwing up the unwanted milk. ds 2 got a dummy at 4 weeks because i felt he was going the same way.
Also i found Infacol pretty useless - just makes puke smell of oranges!

normal · 28/03/2006 22:13

Hmm....she does bring up a little milk from time to time. Not much and not often but still. We'll trying ditching the infacol and gripe water and see if it helps. Fingers crossed!

Hi normal i went through that a couple of weeks ago my dd is now 9 weeks, i think it was that she tried to settle on the boob and dropped off without being winded. I now feed and wind her then put her down to sleep she grizzles for 5 mins then drops off and sleeps for 6 hours. if she doesn't settle then i try a dummy but most times it works.
Don't run to your babe too quick though as i have found that i thought i had better pick her up and just as i went to her she dropped off.
It helps sometimes to shut the door or turn the monitor down but check every 5 mins that their not screaming the house down.
Don't you get grumpy when your tired and someone keeps talking to you? I know i do Wink
Any way i hope this helps good luck

Thanks for all the advice so far!
DD's been on and off the dummy for the last week or two. She originally got too attached to it and it affected her feeding. Now it sometimes helps but the problem is that she seems to have regular 10 minute naps and then starts off again! We'd like her to get back into her old routine of 2-3 hour naps during the day and 5 hours at night.
We've been avoiding picking her up too soon from early on as we quickly learnt it meant we'd sometimes put back the falling asleep by a good 15 mins or more!
A friend of mine on the phone suggested using Ashton and Parsons. I thought that was a teething powder. Is 5 weeks too early?

i agree with earlier post about reflux would be an idea to get it checked out as babies are not always sick with it! and ashtons and parsons is excellant stuff it is a homeopathic stuff for teething and general fretfulness i have used it since dd was about 7 weeks old she had really bad reflux and i found it helped and prefer giving it her than calpol

It might be worth asking your heath visitor about lactose intolerance as well, my friends son has it and he was about 18 months when they realised. all he did was scream at feed times too and she never got much sleep from early days he kept napping for 10mins at a time.
little red patches on his skin were noticed at the time but its all clicking into place now we look back.
most likely it isnt but its best to rule out possible causes to help you sleep.

Bedtime bath by Johnsons helped us settle down for the night as it contains lavender - in fact first time DS1 had a bath in it I was afraid I had comatosed him with the smell he slept so soundly!
