Am trying to start combine feeding my ds who has been exculsively bf for 6months. He will not take formula though. Last week he did take two bottles of formula, but the last few days he has just cried when I have offered it to him.

Also have one really sore nipple where he has bit me with his new bottom teeth. I am 7 weeks pregnant as well so nipples are extra sore.

Has anyone got any tips on trying to get ds to take formula as well as breast milk.

Thanks

That is a good idea tipex to mix it with the formula. Its def not the bottle as ds takes expressed milk from bottle easily. My mum babysat on sat night, he wouldn't take formula from bottle but took expressed straight away.

Will try mixing it tomorrow.

I would persevere with offering the bottle, if you need or want to stop feeding for whatever reason, just decide how long you are prepared to leave him before offering the breast (My mates 6 month old wouldn't take a bottle when starting nursery, and for the first few weeks there - 3 days per week - he held out all day until half three when she came to collect him. The other days she just breastfed as normal, although she hadn't intended to. Luckily he took to solids quite quickly so at least he was getting food during the day. Then gradually he started to take a bottle at nursery, but not at home, and now (several months later) will take a bottle at home. They just persevered offering it each feed. He is one stubborn babe! Does your ds take water from a soft spout baby cup? Could you try a bit of formula in that instead of a bottle? My dd has two bottom teeth, she has bitten me twice and I just said 'no' and pulled her off, she hasn't done it since. It is a bit sore on one side, but bearable. Hope you get some good help

Bepanthen nappy cream always soothed and helped to heal my sore nipples in the early days, and doesn't need washing off before a feed.

You could try giving him the formula in a cup - no reason why it has to come out of a bottle!

Thanks for your help. Ds took about 5 oz formula mixed with breast milk this morning. He cried most of the way through it though, bless him. Tried him again this afternoon with mixed milk again but he would not take it. Just taking each day as it comes, hopefully he will get used to it.

Hi
As he's six months have you thought of giving a sippy cup instead of a bottle? You can also mix it v gradually so for example a sippy cup with expressed milk first gradually mixing it in. Also have you tried leaving the room and someone else offering the milk? Sometimes babes offer much more protest to mum as they know she has the real thing up her jumper and lets face it bm and real boob or formula and plastic teat...

It could be the taste of the formula, different formula's have different tastes.

Do any friends use a different formula that you could try a bottle or 2 of?

my ds took to Aptamil after rejecting other types of formula when I tried this
dd will eat anything
Try formula for the morning feed when he is quite hungry

They're all different arent they? After breastfeeding, our little 'un will not touch Aptamil but insists on Cow and Gate! You could try the individual made up cartons of different milks to see if one taste is preferred ... Ive also heard that the made up milk tastes slightly sweeter than its powdered counterpart and it was using the individual cartons of Cow and Gate 1st milk that got ours to accept formula.
