Dilemma - lesser of two problems?

BeccaBigBaubles · 30/12/2003 22:37

Hi

This is a similar problem to PPH's posted today but I didnt want to "clutter" her thread with it

Harvey is now fully bottle fed (started to just lick my nipple when it was offered so I decided to stop )

Thing is, he has been on Aptamil Extra since he started bottle feeding. He started being sicky at about 10 weeks (while still breastfeeding) this seemed to get progressively worse so I had a go at changing his milk. I tried Omneo Comfort as its a thicker milk so might stay down easier but he refused to drink it pulling disgusted faces. I then tried Milumil which is apparently a gentler milk for Hungrier babies but the problem was just as bad so I decided it must be the "hungrier baby" bit that was causing the problem SO I have put him on Aptamil First milk. He seems to be tolerating this better although is still a bit sick its not as bad as it was at its worst BUT this has brought its own dilemma, after previously sleeping very well at night (10-12 hours) he has started waking for a night feed.

The dilemma is do I switch back to hungry baby stuff, put up with the sickness but fill him up and delay weaning

OR

Keep him on first milk and deal with the extra hunger with some baby rice or similiar? He is getting on for 17 weeks.

Thanks!

I'd go for the baby rice option - DS1 was quite similar at a younger age, HV was horrified but it worked and didn't do him any harm (Unless teenage angst is caused by this combination )

Being sick is annoying and creates more laundry - but its not actually a "problem". Getting up to do a night feed is annoying and creates less sleep for mum but again its fairly normal to get up to a baby this old.
However weaning isn't recommended until 6 months and once done there is no going back. Baby rice does not have as many calories as formula so I am not convinced it would work anyway.

Only you can decide which of the three you most prefer, there are pros and cons to them all.

DS also started poseting badly at 10 weeks, they told me it will clear by itself but didn't told me that it clears not in days or weeks but in months. He was almost perfect 3 months later but then he had this larinx operation and we went bak to square one if not worse, the doctor prescribed Gaviscon for babies but caused him a lot of colic, at the end we introduced the rice and the thing improved, but... he was 5 m then.

I hated the doctor and the HV when they told me to put up with the vomiting (they asked me if the vomit did not reach things at 3 meter distance there was no problem) but ... they were right, so lots of patience but watch his weight.

Thanks for the comments - baby rice is not the way to go I dont think as he isnt even finishing his botles at the moment so not exactly starving.

He has been very sick again today and thats on the first milk so there goes my theory on it being the hungry milk to blame!!

His last bottle he had has defnitely ALL come up - within 10 minutes of his feed he was sick 3 times quite alot with undigested milk and then since then (about an hour and a half) he has been possetting digested milk to - this has been the same for most of his feeds today so Id guess his milk intake is low today.

The problem seems to be getting worse!

Sorry I know Im going on BUT what should I do now - he has brought back I would guess all of his 6.30 feed, should I offer him more before bed?

bunnyrabbit · 02/01/2004 13:34

Hi Becca,
Not been around for a while, sorry to hear Harvey's having problems. As you know my baby bunny is the same age as Harvey and has reflux. I started weaning him this week in the hope that more solids and less liquid in his tummy will stop all the milk sloshing around and coming back out. I've been assured by other mum's with reflux babies that this worked for them.

As for weaning at 6 months, the digestive system cannot take protein, gluten etc, at 4 months, but fruit, veg and baby rice are OK.

It's really up to you and him. If you're happier keeping him off solids for the moment, then don't rush it. If, however you want to offer him some babyrice and see if he takes it, I don't think it would hurt, would it?

Oh sorry, meant to say I would try offering some more milk and see if he'll take it. Try a smaller feed than usual burp him thouroughly and keep him upright for an hour after....

bunnyrabbit, thank you for your advice! I saw your other thread - dont feel guilty please! You know whats right for your little man and in his case with reflux it might improve things for him.

Ive just had harvey to the docs today as he was really hurling after feeds and nothing was helping, Harvey has reflux too it seems! He has been prescribed with infant gaviscon and I have to take him back on Monday to further discuss things that can be done and what to do next.

I would find it really helpful talking further with you with both boys being same age, stage and refluxers! If you fancy a chat about it, contact me through contact a talker thingy.
