Fluconazole for thrush - what is a loading dose?

Have persuaded the doctor to prescribe fluconazole for me but he has said 2x50mg tablets per day for 14 days.

The breastfeeding network recommends a loading dose of 150mg-300mg followed by 2x50mg per day for 10 days. Does this just mean take 150mg for the first dose?

Also should I carry on with all the other stuff? Doctor was useless, have got daktarin oral gel for my nipples and ds's mouth, nystan drops for me (guess I should stop these now?) pus canestan for ds's bottom. The doctor didn't even believe I had thrush in my milk ducts (apparently it doesn't exist and is a figment of womens imagination?!) so couldn't get any useful advice off him at all.

Grateful for any help at all as am in agony!

a loading dose is a one-off larger prescription

so for example, as you said, a one-off dose of say 150mg the 2x50mg for 10 days

its just a kick-start sort of thing, a lot of drugs are prescribed this way

I AM NO EXPERT but i would say that you would probably be advised to continue with the nystan and canesten, but i really dont know about the daktarin.

you could always call NHS 24 in the first instance for more advice

hope you feel better soon x

Thanks nailpolish, have just taken 150mg and am hoping for a miracle!

Will try nhs direct but they usually tell me to go to a&e(!)

Does anybody else have any info on the rest of the stuff?

anchovies - GP's talk bollocks when it comes to bf.

YES, follow the BFN advice. They have excellent advice and it WORKS !

I never took oral meds. for my thrush, but if BFN advise a higher dose initially, do it. It is based on research on bf mothers.

YES, do continue with al the thrush things you have mentioned EXCEPT Nystan. Bin it. It's rubbish, full of sticky toffee sugar crap, does nothing for thrush.

Use Dakatrin for the baby's mouth and Canestan or Daktarin on your nipples.

Also read LLL and kellymom.com websites, both have excellent advice on thrush.

Good luck Smile

anchovies, tell you GP if he had tits with milk ducts in them he would know what it is like to suffer from thrush !

I had horrid shooting pains right down my chest for several nights and not a single GP could tell me what it was until I read kellymom and BFN websites. The pain was so bad it used to keep me awake at night.

I used Dakatrin for DS (again due to BFN advice) and Canestan on my nipples. GP (female) was not going to prescribe anything for my nipples until I said it was vital otherwise DS and I would just pass it back and forth between us.

She also prescribed Nystan which I binned after 4 days as it turned out to be useless. I bought Daktarin Oral Gel off the shelf at the Chemist. It worked !!

I had a similar experience anchovies. I phoned ans spoke to a bfn counsellor in the end - very helpful.

The fluconazole is not contraindicated in breastfeeding mothers, but it's not licensed. However, it s known that the dose that goes through to baby in your milk is less than the dose that is licensed for use with neonates. I understand applying for drug licenses is expensive.
