DS2 is nearly 2 months and for the past 3 weeks or so, he latches on to the breast for a couple of minutes, then has a little wimper, then feeds quite happily - whats that all about? Anyone know?

Is he wimpering as in whinging or is he wimpering with the joy of milky bliss? They do get rather expressive at the breast, it is a big big part of their lives and I think they have a separate relationship with it (now I sound like a weirdo) but as long as he is feeding well as you say then nothing to worry about.

He sounds upset - it only lasts a few seconds and then he starts sucking quite happily again and doesn't wimper anymore. I'm not particularly worried, but its odd

it is odd, but their little digestive systems are not really formed well until 12 weeks, I expect he will stop it by then, maybe it is something to do with his tummy starting to fill up.
Did DS1 do anything similar?

Does his feeding rhythm change afterwards. Perhaps it is just a surge of intial feeding to satisfy thirst/hunger followed by something a bit more comforting. Does he have a cold as the sucking might start to clear his ears and perhaps they pop a bit, not painfully but a bit of a surprise.

Doesn't sound like anything worth worryoing over if he continues to feed otherwise.

Didn't b/f DS1 and I can't tell if his feeding rhythm changes after as he does it so soon after latching on. I had rather hoped for a surge of messages telling me they all do that

Could it be overenthusiastic letdown? My two both used to go on, pull off as they got a powershower down the back of their throats, pause as milko jetted embarrassingly over the room, then go on again. DD2 still does it a bit, at six months, as it sprays all over her face

suzywong · 27/12/2003 20:54

good point, motherinferior, that happened occaisonally with mine in the early weeks.

My daughter did just that briefly and occasionally does something similar now. It's quite a sad little sound in her case but I think now it's when the milk's letting down or taking a time to let down. Just basically when it's not going her way. The little ego maniac ...
