Sterilising question

hairytale · 19/09/2012 20:57

the only thing my DD (8 months) will drink from (other than a boob) is a 9 month plus sippy cup (tommee tippee).

How can it be kept sterile (we are introducing some formula) out and about?

If she's picking things up off the floor and putting them into her mouth there's no need to steilise. (I may be wrong though, my son's old now)

hairytale · 19/09/2012 21:31

Apparently if giving formula, the cup must be sterilised as nasty bugs can grow in formula. It's the formula that's the issue. She has water from an unsterilised cup.

No need to sterilise at that age.

MigGril · 20/09/2012 06:46

well either use Milton and cold water to sterilises. Or a pan of Bolling water for 10 minutes job done. or if you have a dishwasher as it does the same thing.

And yes it's three milk that may not be cleaned out that could be a problem

ginmakesitallok · 20/09/2012 06:57

If you are transporting formula then yes you still need to sterilise

hairytale · 20/09/2012 08:42

So if I go to my mums today and want to offer some formula, I need to take some Milton, basically.

Can you not sterilise the cup ans take it with you? Add formula when needed. No it won't be considered 'sterile' anymore but at that age it's not required - just that the milk bugs have been destroyed.

URMyDinosaurOnASpaceship · 20/09/2012 08:50

So long as cup is washed thoroughly in hot soapy water then rinsed and air dried it shouldn't be a problem. If the milk is the problem then just make sure it's all washed off.

hairytale · 20/09/2012 09:46

I'm really really confused here! Some saying you need to sterilise for formula some saying you don't!!

Ok this babycentre link says that bottles should be sterilised up to a year but that thoroughly cleaned cups are ok :)

to be on the safe side I still put all cups that have had milk in them in the dishwasher and my two are 5 years and almost 2 years. Bacteria in milk can bread some nasty bugs.

FrankWippery · 20/09/2012 11:55

I didn't bother with sterilising once they started putting any old shit in their mouths.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 20/09/2012 18:22

Sterilize cup before you go out. Put (now clean) cup in change bag. Pour formula in when needed (assume your using ready made cartons. If not, I'd make formula up in bottle then pour into cup or go by the markings on side of cup)

At 8 months though, sterilizing isn't really needed. Hot soapy water is enough. Don't let it become more complicated than it ought to be Smile

wigglesrock · 20/09/2012 21:18

The formula needs to be sterile, not the cup. You need to make up the formula correctly or use pre-made cartons. I have never sterilised past 6 months.

hairytale · 21/09/2012 08:51

Thanks all.

Sterilise the formula (eg. use cartons or make sure you make the milk up fresh with 70 degree water) but I would just make sure the cup are properly clean. A dishwasher is good enough to sterilise cups.

hairytale · 21/09/2012 13:02

Yes we're using cartons. She's mostly breast fed and will be able to have cows milk in a few months anyway.

nickeldaisical · 21/09/2012 13:04

if the formula is readymade, you don't need to sterlize the cup.

it's the powder that has bugs, not the ready made stuff.

if you were using powder then you'd make it up with over 70degree water before pouring it into the cup.
