When I get home after a few hours away tomorrow, and find that DS has ignored all my lovingly expressed milk, what the bloody hell shall I do with it? I can't bear to pour it down the sink again, shall I chuck it in my bath or something? Grin

How old is ds can u use it in his porridge? Or mixed with a rusk/cereal

How long has it been out for. Could u freeze it???

needsadviceplease · 19/09/2012 10:46

Thanks. He's 21wks, so no good for cereal yet, but that's def something to remember.

The oldest of the milk is 4 days, so I don't think it can be frozen. I think really I can only do hippyish things which don't involve consuming it. Was thinking of how it's good for conjunctivitis and nappy rash, but (happily) ds has neither.

Heartbreaking pouring it down the plughole...

It is tough throwing away EBM - it seems such a waste. Not much you can use it for at 4 days (give it to the dog maybe ?!). Normally I would use it for rice, or cereal or something.

jkklpu · 19/09/2012 11:12

If it's 4 days old, it's already too far gone to feed him anyway. Freeze ebm first then you can defrost when necessary instead of just keeping in the fridge.

NotSoSuperMa · 19/09/2012 12:38

Jkklpu are you trying to give me a heart attack?! I'm exclusively pumping this week as I'm recovering from an operation - I'm freezing some milk and storing other bags in the fridge (at the back, as per Kellymom) but am expecting refrigerated milk to last for up to a week. I thought 3 days was a gold standard, but up to a week was still ok. Will go and check...

Nagoo · 19/09/2012 12:41

I used to hate throwing it away.

Even when pouring the mildly alcoholic product of an evening out down the sink, I used to think there must be a market for this like some sort of lactatory baileys.

melliebobs · 19/09/2012 13:58

Taken from my BFN fridge magnet

Safe storage
Room temp max time 6hrs
Fridge 5-10°c 3 days
Fridge 0-4°c 8 days
If temp rises above 4°c after 3 days use within 6hrs or thow away

Previously frozen milk
Defrosted in fridge use within 12hrs
Defrosted outside fridge use immediately

So there u go Smile

needsadviceplease · 19/09/2012 14:32

Lactatory baileys - brilliant!

I still might put it in the bath you know...

To be fair, he might even drink it (I've not gone out yet). But I'm feeling pessimistic.

Really sorry, OP - got times wrong (it's nearly 5 years since I was doing it before yesterday, first time for ds3). But Babycentre says 5 days in 0-4C fridge. It's interesting that different sources say different things.

I learned the hard way that my milk goes off when frozen, so ended up pouring out bags and bags of the stuff after I'd gone back to work the first time around. So depressing. Hope your baby drinks some.
