Green poo - good or bad?

My baby girl is 3 and a half weeks old. (Warning! graphic poo description coming up...) She has been doing the normal runny mustard yellow poos once every two to three days for a couple of weeks now. Today her poo has taken on a greeny tinge (still the consistency of cream but more green than yellow - no bits). She also sounds as if she could be getting a bit congested in her nose. Should I take her to the GP or is this normal?

ooh - I meant to add - she is totally breast fed and is feeding every 3 hours but not for very long each time. Thanks

As long as there are no other signs of any problems then green poo is rarly anything to be concerned about.

She could be coming down with something if she is getting congested, but unless she has a temperature and seems unwell then you probably don't need to see the GP. You could give them a ring and ask if your unsure though.

In fact if you're ever unsure about anything always give them a ring they are normally very good with young babies. You can ring your HV to for advice on things like this.

Is she gaining weight ok? The only thing that strikes me about your post is that she is feeding and pooing quite infrequently.

My four month old EBF DS recently had green squits for about two weeks. I checked with both a practice nurse and a HV and neither of them were remotely worried. As long as baby's not vomiting as well, is weeing plenty (i.e. not dehydrated) and is otherwise happy it's not a problem. Smile

I think it's ok, (the green poo) but when my baby had it it was green and foamy (lovely). I was not letting him feed enough off one breast and too much watery fore milk was causing excess gas and foamy poo, I fed him from one side til it was completely empty, this took 3 or 4 feeds (I have too much milk) and it helped lots as he was them getting the less watery milk at the end. Worked for me.

Similar situation with my 5 week old DS, congested and snotty with green pop. Doctor checked out and said viral bug. As long as feeding, ok in self and lots of wet nappies then he was happy with him
