DD is 6 weeks and now has bad eczema. My eldest and hubby Are allergic to cows milk protein. I dnt have a lot of dairy. Per se but may obv b hidden in other foods I dnt really have time to read labels! Should I think about discontinuing bfeeding as a friend mentioned ?

Why did your friend suggest giving up?

Poor baby.....does it bother her? Have you had an opinion from a specialist? Some babies grow out of this very quickly.

If you stop bf you would have to give formula.

That's made from cows milk....so I don't understand the benefit.

You can get specialist formula where the cows milk protein is already broken down and in some cases (not all) this helps with allergic reactions to cows milk protein. You can also get formula without cows milk protein in it (soya formula) but this is far from ideal (google the drawbacks of soya formula) and your baby may react to soya.

Have a word with your GP and get a referral - your baby's condition may be unrelated to diet anyway.

Hell of a lot easier to give up dairy than give up breastfeeding I'd imagine. Plus formula is made from cows milk.
It might not even be the dairy causing the eczema, then she'd loose the benefits of the breastmilk for nothing.

My baby is allergic to cows milk. I found it easier to start reading the labels and give up dairy than to stop feeding her. When your baby hits 6 months and eats food too then you will have to read all the labels and cook dairy free anyway

Catsu this is only the case if her baby is allergic....she may be, but she needs a diagnosis to save any unnecessary label reading and diet exclusions :)

Oh don't give up!! I'm dairy & soya free for DS, have been since 6 weeks. It's a faff initially but easy once you get used to it. You can eliminate then retry at 6 months, so it's not forever.

Soya formula isn't recommended & won't help if dairy intolerant as the proteins are similar.

Would think formula would be more of a pain as it would be on prescription

Im not sure it is a milk allergy but my eldest had it she was on neocate until a year she can still have milk but gives her tummy ache my DH also can't drink anlot of it. 2nd DD had exzema slightly on too of legs at age 2 she is fine with cows milk. I also gave her a few bottles of SMA when she was a few day old whilst waiting for my milk to come in she was 9lb and starving and she was fine no reaction at all so perhaps she isn't but my friend said if she is will have to switch to special formula. Thing is it's the cows milk protein not lactose. I know I should give it up but standing in a busy supermarket with three kids fighting and arguing doesn't sound like an easy time to stand and read all ingredients :( I will see how she goes as it nay not b milk related after all. I really enjoy breastfeeding and don't want to think it's causing this really nasty rash .

My dd had eczema too (still does a little bit) but it was nothing to do with dairy. I'd keep going with the bfing and talk to your doctor next time you see them (when you take d for jabs in a couple of weeks, maybe).

Seriouslysleepdeprived · 17/09/2012 16:51

I agree could be anything causing the eczema. Definitely speak with a medical professional first, eczema is caused by all sorts of things.
