Hi, my BFF has had a preterm baby 32wks and is in hospital using a K Fisio R Electric breast pump.

Apparently this is amazing - we have hired one for her as she has been discharged while baby remains in hospital. However it is not really cutting it - so was wondering if anyone knew where we could find the model that she had in hospital.

I've tried googling but to no avail, hoping you amazing mums can help!
Thanks

I think you would be unlikely to find the exact model they have in the hospital, not least because they cost several thousand pounds. NCT only seem to hire out hospital grade Ameda or Medela pumps.

What difficulties is she having with the one you have hired? How long has she been using it? It could just be that her let down is not releasing as easily when she is at home away from her baby / feeling tense, etc.

FWIW I struggled to get anything with my pump at home when I was first discharged, even though I could get loads using the pump in SCBU, but over a few days it increased. I now have an Ameda Lactaline double electric pump which does a pretty good job (in relation to the hospital pump) for about £120.

Best wishes to your friend and I hope her baby is doing well.

Maybe give these people a call?

They might be able to recommend a pump thats similar. They hire out pumps too.

There's no such thing as 'hospital grade' anything in the UK, as far as I know - it's a US classification. There are robust pumps used primarily in hospitals and/or hired out/lent to parents....no need to look for 'hospital grade' :)

Your friend should be getting support from the hospital, and how about suggesting they ask the staff in the NICU/SCBU where she might get the same pump for use at home? Or borrow one from the hospital?

Key to successful expressing is doing it often and with a decent pump - of which there are several kinds if she can't get the one she has been using. Agree that contacting one of the helplines or the expressyourself website is a good move.

Hope she gets decent help - she absolutely needs to be expressing day and night at least 6-8 times in 24 hours to protect her milk supply, even though that will produce gallons more than the baby needs at present.
