Tips for healing a cracked nipple

I have had a very badly cracked nipple almost since my DS was born (he's now 5 weeks). I think it was caused by poor latch, related to a posterior tongue tie which he had snipped on Monday. Since then feeding has been much more comfortable. I've had his latch checked and it was declared very good by the feeding advisors and it now only hurts for the first 10-15 seconds after latching him on, which I presume is as the nipple is being drawn to the back of his mouth.

Whilst my nipple is showing signs of healing - the crack looks slightly less deep - it's doing so very slowly! I think this is probably to be expected given how bad it was - a millimetre or two wide, from the base at the top of the nipple right across the centre to about 3/4 of the way down - is there anything I can do to encourage it to heal quicker? I'm expressing and rubbing in a little milk after feeding, letting it dry and then slathering on the Lansinoh right down into the crack and putting my bra back on (with breast pad). Is there anything else I can do? How long should it be taking to heal properly with the latch corrected?

TIA.

Should add we've both been treated for thrush in case that was stopping it healing. All other symptoms eg breast pain and burning after feeding gone so I don't think it's that.

I feel your pain. Literally! I'm suffering from terrible cracks too. Although I think the term "wound" is more appropriate. Crack seems too small a word. Carry on doing what you are doing but I would try changing the position you feed in too. This may help the healing process as your baby will take your nipple in differently. It is such a terrible thing. My bub is 6 weeks now but due to ongoing thrush issues mine are taking such a long time to show any signs of healing. I hate it when it seems to have got smaller to then look down after the feed and seeing it gaping open again. Arghhh!!
I really do wonder why this BF is so difficult!
Good luck

Oh, I did try nipple shields too but despite feeling much more comfortable the feed took ages and I was too scared about getting mastitis again(!). They may work for you though.

Hi, I had terrible cracked nipples for about 2 weeks. DS is nearly 6 weeks and feeding is now quite pleasurable. Anyway after every feed I used to wash my nipple in a salt and tea tree oil solution. Fill the sink with hot water, add both and then use a flannel to wash said nipps. Rinse with warm water and then leave to air dry. Put lansinoh on and clean bra 2 x a day. Fresh nipple pads after every feed.

This sorted me within a week and I still wash them once a day in a saline solution.

I read on here about multi man nipple pads being a miracle cure so I got some and they are. Literally overnight nip much better. You can get them from amazon. X

I had terrible cracked nipples caused by thrush and used some daktacort cream on them. The cracks improved literally over night. I saw the daktacort cream on the breast feeding network leaflet but was surprised when i bought it that it says it is for athelets foot!

Lansing cream. Definitely works, safe for baby and worth every penny. Boots sells it, also Amazon.co.uk
