Tongue tie snipped

Hi all

My daughter had her tongue tie snipped yesterday. She is two weeks old.

Ironically, before the procedure we had no problems feeding, other than slightly sore nipples for me. Today, she seems to be struggling a bit with latching on and staying latched on.

Does anyone have experience with thus? Is she just getting used to the new mobility of her tongue after yesterday's procedure and will it get better? I am worried that things are somehow harder for her now than before...

Thanks so much

It will take her a little while to adjust - DS had his TT snipped at around 2wo as well, but before that his latch wasn't good - extreme pain for me, lots of clicking for him and slow feeding (2h at a time).

After the TT I was asked to feed him straight away, which I did - but it took a good 2 or 3 days before he got used to the new freedom of his tongue and his feeds sped up to around the 45 minute mark.

Give it a couple of days - maybe change the feeding position? - and if she's still having troubles, contact your BF expert.

My DD also had hers snipped at two weeks. I remember thinking it was going to be a miracle cure but it definitely took a few days to settle in and make a difference.

Also, are you doing the wound massage? That really upset DD (and me - I would be in tears doing it as she'd be screaming so much!) Once that was out of the way after a couple of weeks or so, everything settled down. She's now six months and has been exclusively bf and it's been great. So there is hope!

And like Thumbwitch says, contact your BF expert if you can. I went to a breastfeeding cafe for a couple of check ups after the snip to make sure the wound was healing ok and for general advice. Maybe that would help if there is one in your area?

Good luck!

Thank you so much both, that is really reassuring. It was just so sad this morning to have her clearly hungry but only kind of licking at the nipples, when before she was feeding well.

But spent lots of time today trying different positions, with pillows etc, and every feed now is a bit better. She is getting used to her 'new tongue mobility' I think. I am sure the TT procedure was the right thing to do in the medium/long term. Also phoned the local BF group (couldn't go as still recovering from EMCS and it is a bit far) who were really helpful - good to know they are around if needed in future.

Thanks so much again

I am sure it will get better. Honestly, I was about to give up on bf but hung on until the snip and it made so much difference and we've never looked back. Sure you and your DD will be fine too. Good luck with it all.

Sometimes the bf counsellors from the clinics will do hone visits - or at least they did in my area (SE London).
