So confused and don't know what to do to help my baby! :(

I've been really lucky with baby who's had a pretty perfect latch etc from day one. She's just past a month now though and everything's suddenly changed! :(

It's like she's suddenly forgotten how to latch! She does a lovely open mouth for me, I put nipple in and she sort of just lightly closes her mouth around it or even just licks it! You'd think it's her saying she doesn't actually want it (as helpful friend who told me to 'stop forcing your boobs on her' did) but she gets so frustrated seemingly trying to get a latch and if I take her away cries and roots until I put her back.

Eventually she'll manage to latch on, but comes off often (again, never used to do this) and when she is on it's like she isn't creating a proper seal as I can hear air going in.

In the last week she's also started to throw up a couple of times a day, which was unknown of with her before, and i also hear her do a sort of clicking sound sometimes when she's trying to or has failed to latch.

I have no thrush symptoms and I can't see any white in her mouth, other than the thick coating on her tongue, which presumably is just milk? The other thing I thought of was tongue tie, but presumably if that was an issue she wouldn't have fed so perfectly for the first 3 weeks?

Please advise if you can, it's making me so upset being so unable to help her when she looks at me as if to say 'why can't i have any milk mummy?!' :(

If the coating on her tongue is thick and white that could definitely be a sign of thrush, I doubt it's milk. I don't know whether that would cause her to stop feeding but I would get it checked by your GP ASAP. If you ring and say you're BFing a tiny baby they can usually find you an appointment pretty quickly in my experience. If it is thrush make sure you get treated as well - you may have it even if you have no symptoms and need to make sure you don't just pass it back and forth between you. Good luck!

If the coating on her tongue is milk, it will scrape off easily. If it bleeds when you scrape it, then it is likely to be thrush.

Thrush can make babies reluctant to latch if their mouths are uncomfortable.

But, you are right, it could possibly be tongue tie, despite having fed ok for the first while. The latching on and off, unable to create a seal, clicking noise, the throwing up all suggest that tongue tie is a possibility

have a read of this and see if any of the other symptoms on the list apply
