I'm planning on feeding DC2 and have been hearing lots about pillows so was just wondering if there ate any recommendations.

None at all would be my suggestion unless expecting twins!

rubyslippers · 10/09/2012 19:47

I used a regular cushion

I also had one of those v shaped cushions which I had anyway

peanutMD · 10/09/2012 20:45

Definitely not expecting twins! :o

Shouldve mentioned I will be having an ELCS will this make any difference do you think?

Hi, I had an emcs 8 weeks ago and found my dreamgenii pregnancy pillow a god send during the first few days so much more comfortable to feed dd whilst tummy was still rather sore. It also gave support to my back

Well maybe, it is a pretty personal thing really. With a CS you'll probably be most comfortable feeding lying down at first until you can sit comfortably. You might find you are fine with normal cushions. Try not to rely on a cushion, sit comfortably with a couple of pillows to hand and latch the baby on then if you want some support pop a pillow under the baby. That way you know you are latched on in the right way, if you lay the baby on the cushion then latch on you may find yourself hunching forwards which will not do you any favors.

With everything available online so effectively if you find you'd like a cushion you can easily get one for next day delivery.

I bought a Brest friend pillow from amazon that was good as you strap it on you. It also has a pocket at the front(!)

However, with hindsight, a cushion or pillow works just as well. As I had a CS I found lying down a good position. Actually, I still do as its reallly cosy and DD and I often have an afternoon nap together after her feed.

I don't think special cushions are all that great but it's different for everyone.

May I ask how you stay awake doing feeds lying down?
I'm a deep sleeper and would be paranoid about suffocating baby as this happened to a family member when I was younger.

Well I don't stay awake. but I co-sleep anyway.

If feeding lying down make sure ou are doing so in a safe place. Baby is on firm mattress not under duvet or with head on duvet or near pillows. Your natural position when feeding will protect the baby, you'll have one arm curled above her head and knees under her so she can't wriggle up or down. That same position prevents you from rolling onto her.

If you have a little google for Helen Ball's sleep studies, she has done lots of research into co-sleeping which will give you plenty of info which can help you decide if feeding lying down/co sleeping (or at least potentially falling asleep while feeding) is something you want to do or not.

I use a pillow I bought from IKEA its blue and cream it's a tear drop shape its not designed to be a bf'ing pillow but it works perfectly as one and was only about ten quid!

arthurfowlersallotment · 11/09/2012 13:53

What Indith said.

Also, if you have a smart phone, MN, the daily mail app Jezebel.com, and tumblr kept me awake.

naturalbaby · 11/09/2012 13:56

A solid foam one rather than one with beanbag type beans in it that baby will sink into.

I only used them for a week or two till things had settled down, especially with ds2 and ds3 - when you have an older child to look after you soon get used to multitasking while feeding a baby in one arm!

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 11/09/2012 13:59

I think any V shaped one should work. Might be worth going along to a breastfeeding cafe and try a few out before investing to find one that works for you.
I tried this at my local one and had I carried on with breastfeeding would defintely have invested!

iggi777 · 11/09/2012 21:53

I had a v shaped one for ds1, and bought a "my brest friend" (sic) for ds2. It straps on as pp has said which is handy, but I particularly like the firmness of it, it's like a shelf for your baby. BUT once the baby got a bit bigger/easier to attach, I haven't used it so much, so it's a lot of money for short-term use (but can re-sell I suppose). I've had 2 cs and no problems holding the baby for feeding, cradle hold or rugby ball both work fine as well as lying down.
