Tongue tie snipped

Hello everyone.
After 6 weeks of nightmare constant and very painful breastfeeding we got our baby's posterior tongue tie snipped yesterday.
It was quick, non stressful and already feeding is improving. We are going longer between feeds and although it will am sure take a few days for my battered nipples to heal and baby to relearn how to feed, I am confident we will get there!
This came after 5 weeks of help from health visitor, midwives, countless breastfeeding counsellors, breastfeeding support group, antenatal teacher and many more.
This was a final last ditch attempt to be successful with breastfeeding.
My advice to anyone struggling with pain with breastfeeding is to not accept answers from professionals that all is ok when you know in your heart of hearts that it isn't.
All of the people we saw helped with latch and said there was no tongue tie. They said my technique was impeccable which is why I couldn't understand why it still really hurt.
I'm so glad I persevered and after speaking to my friend, their 4 yr old has been diagnosed with tongue tie. It's really affected her speech and she's now got to have hers snipped with anaesthetic, a much bigger procedure.
My baby's tongue tie was hidden under a membrane (??) and very hard to diagnose which is why it was missed.
Anyway, we have a happy ending, thanks to everyone on here who have offered support

Ow! You have my sympathy- 6 weeks is a long time! My DS was done at 7 days, thankfully id bfed before and knew something was wrong. Glad it's all sorted now Smile

Have you been told about stretching exercises to stop it reattacning?

there are instructions in this booklet, about half way through

DS1 had undiagnosed tongue tie and we are facing very expensive orthodontic work to correct it all. Plus he has had a whole list of other problems too,

I hope you manage to avoid them Smile

Oh and tell your friend that there is a clinic in Huddersfield who will do lip and tongue ties with a laser. No GA needed for any age.

here

Ow indeed! DS had his done just after 2w - I'm not sure I could have held out as long as you managed! DS's was only partial and only found by the BFing expert, using her finger - 3 other HCPs had already said he didn't have one Hmm

When this one is born, it will be checked immediately and thoroughly for tonguetie as well and snipped asap.

My DS was born with a TT too and had it snipped at 9 hours old. He barely made a fuss when it was done and the improvement of the latch was evident. If we'd have had to wait for any period of time my nipples would have suffered without a doubt and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have carried on BF.

Ah. Glad you got it sorted at last. My LO was not treated for 4 weeks which resulted in sore nipples for me, no weight gain in him and a very stressful situation. I am so glad we had his snipped at home by the lovely Mary Griffiths after having been told he did not have a PTT by another HP.
The difference was seen within 2 weeks. No pain whilst feeding & baby started gaining weight.
His milk transfer had been so poor my milk was drying up so I started taking 9 tablets of domperidone a day.
The trauma to my nipples led to thrush on my nipples & his bottom. Thankfully the treatment from the dr got rid of that quickly and it has not come back.
Baby is 3 months old now and we are still bf. yay!
If we have any more children I will get them reviewed & treated ASAP after birth. So much stress could have been avoided by such a simple procedure. & my baby would not have been starved for so long.....

I had a really similar experience. DS had a full 100% severe tongue tie that I fed with for six whole weeks. I can't believe it did that now.

I saw endless professional, MW's, HV's, BF councillors, traipsed round BFing cafes with stitches from an episiotomy, a newborn i couldn't feed & was brushed off constantly. They refused to refer me as he was gaining weight.

With the help of lovely MNetters I finally got it sorted. I feel pretty cross about it still though & think I might complain.
