Leaking - does it ever slow down/ stop?!

I'm leaking a lot - completely saturating lansinoh pads every couple of hours, feel let downs happening quite often when i'm not feeding and if i have a peek can see boobs literally spraying into bra.

I smell horrible - every time i feed i hate opening bra to smell fetid milk smell and then after feed hate putting boob back onto puffy, saturated pad before have chance to change it again.

Anyway, not the worst ailment in the world but wondering is this just a getting used to things thing (baby a month old) or do people leak for as long as they feed?

Mine stopped gradually, there were big improvements after a couple of months and by 9 months my boobs felt totally normal (ie how they were pre baby) but obviously produced enough milk for dd. I used Boots reusable pads but always had disposable ones in my bag in case I wanted to change them.

Around 4 months mine got a lot better and there was very little leakage. I don't need to wear breast pads anymore and haven't since about 20 weeks.

needsadviceplease · 08/09/2012 16:33

Mine were never as bad as you describe but pretty much stopped leaking at around 14 weeks, only very occasionally since - ds is now 20 weeks and if I do leak, its just a dribble from my non-feeding side while he's on the other. Hope yours stop soon.

Mine were really awful. If you check my previous posts you'll see I ended up using nappies whilst in the house to try stem the leaking. About 4 months it settled down alot and now at 5 months I barely leak at all. Only a tiny bit when feeding. It will get better

Hope I stops/slows down soon. Have you thought about those breast shells (or whatever they're called) to collect the milk? Sounds like free expressing and you could freeze it.

GL :)

I had to use nappies, as advised by feekerry at night and around the house. DS is almost 10 weeks now and it's definitely improving. Some days I only need to change the pads once and I don't soak the bed at night. I still have to stuff a muslin in my bra cup on the side he's not using during feeds though. Great improvement anyway.

Just wanted to say, that the happy suggestion is brilliant! I always leak loads (like you puddlejumper). I used to stuff towels down my front as well as all over the bed at night. How do you erm ,secure the nappies feekerry?

Superslinger · 11/09/2012 14:13

Thanks so much everyone - relieved it won't be forever1 Also loving the nappy idea! Had considered trying to fashion something out of sanitary pads, but thought it would never work... Second helen on keeness to know any how to make nappies work?!

In desperation once I cut nappies up but they then sort of disintegrated- that weird gel stuff everywhere!

With DS1 I leaked terribly til 6m and then very little after that. DS2 feeds much more and I only stopped leaking from the other side very recently -he's 15m. I still wear pads at night though as he pops off sometimes fast asleep mid-let down and it can get messy...

MigGril · 11/09/2012 19:33

something that you can try, if you put pressure on the nipple with the heal of your hand it will stop the flow.

Minty82 · 11/09/2012 19:40

It's awful isn't it?! I remember feeling so physically disgusting a month in - still bleeding; pouring milk everywhere; and generally covered in baby sick and poo to boot... The good news is I stopped leaking altogether after a couple of months - still produced plenty of milk but it now only comes out when I want it to. Ditched breast pads, bras in bed etc, and now only have leakage issues if DD sleeps longer than 7hrs. At which point I'm so busy dancing round the room singing Hallelujah I couldn't care less if my pyjamas are saturated...

Wanttostayinbedallday · 11/09/2012 20:01

It will definitely settle down especially once the baby starts feeding less frequently. I think my son (who was a greedy devil) started bigger gaps around 4 months and then you get into a pattern and your body knows after a few days how much to produce and when. It's just your hormones reacting to the baby crying etc and letting down milk. There's a lot going on in your body right now!!

Superslinger · 19/09/2012 17:44

Thanks ladies. Used nappies last night and woke feeling like a new (non-yoghurt-smelling) woman! Still hoping things settle down soon though...

I leaked through a shirt and a cardigan during a job interview on Monday. It was brilliant.
