How feasible is is to breastfeed from one side?

Just that really - DS is almost 9 months and has refused one breast for about 3 weeks. I think it's teething related. Will my supply dry up or can I feed from one side for some time? I'm aiming for at least another 3 months. He feeds about 3 times a day and twice at night.

Totally feasible....sorry in a dash but suggest you call any of the helplines for more info :)

Totally feasible. You may end up a bit lopsided though! Could express from the other boob and freeze? I always got better expression when feeding from 1 side expressing the other at the same time- you do look like a prize jersey milk cow though!

Maybe no need to express more than minimally at this stage ...and any lop sidedness is temporary and mild.:)

I fed pretty much exclusively from one side for over a year (she fed till 2 1/2 but is now 7 so I can't remember dates as well as I'd like!) she just didn't like my left side and refused it consistently. I wasn't lopsided after the initial feeding from one side they seemed to even out

Thanks, that's all I need to know! Grin
I used to get gallons from expressing but very little now, no matter what method. I'm not lopsided at the moment, my left side is still producing a bit, but it won't be noticeable anyway as I have small boobs and I'm back in normal bras. I'm so proud I've been able to bf for this long after facing problems left, right and centre. It would have been a shame to stop.

I started feeding DS from one side at about 9 months. He just always seemed to fuss on the other side. He's now 2.3 and still feeding off one side for mornings, night time feed and naps, so it is very doable!

Another success story re feeding one sided from me. I had breast surgery on one side and was never relaxed feeding on that side. So I ended up feeding from the right side only, probably for at least 6 months. Good luck! And you should be proud. You have done great to get this far.

Did it up until 6 months with dd, could have carried on longer. Lost milk one side after mastitis.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 07/09/2012 10:12

My DD has fed from one side for approx 9 months now.
She is 20 months and is just doing a bed time feed for 6 months.

That boob is slightly bigger but it always was anyway. I'm the only one that would notice I'd say.

littlemachine · 07/09/2012 10:14

Great! Feeling positive about being able to carry on now.

As already said, yes, it's fine to feed from just one side.

I've been feeding DD from one side for around 7 months, since she was about 9/10 months old and intend not only to carry on but to also possibly tandem nurse my next baby using just the one side. I stopped feeding from the other side due to recurrent mastitis, but due to previous surgery/problems resulting from that/the mastitis, it would now be difficult for a baby to latch that side. I do still have milk there though and I think it would be easy to get the supply back up if I needed/wanted to.

I gave up on the left when ds was 8 months, as it was still painful on letdown, leaked all over, and uncomfortable. Kept with the right until he was 14 months - left stopped leaking after a few days. Didn't even look lopsided.

Dd is 6 months and while it's all gone a lot better, I'm trying to cut down on the left, but it does leak all over, so it's 2-3 feeds on right, 1 on left, or sometimes getting her to have a bit of the left if she's still awake after right-feeding.
