Windy baby

Hi there i'm new to mumsnet.
My son is 12 weeks old and has lots of wind. he has about 3 burps per feed and still isn't satisfied sometimes. I have recently changed him to the 3 month + teat - could this make him more windy? It takes sometimes upto 15 mins to get one burp up. This was the case with the number 2 teat too. I use AVENT bottles. I have tried tommee tippee and the teats collasped ! nice.
HELP - advice. these soft teats are obviously no good for Ross as I have never breast fed, but i'm sure these AVENT bottles are causing problems.

I think Avent are meant to be the worst aren't they? Are you burping your DS every couple of ounzes?

There are lots of mums on here with more exp. and better advice.. Come on mummys!

Welcome to Mumsnet BTW.. and as someone said to me "you'll never leave!!" (and I haven't!) Grin

I burp him when he spits the bottle out, usually after 5 ounces.
The teats with AVENT are nice and strong. I have since tried a first steps vari flow teat, a boots variflow latex teat and the tommeee tippee nuby 3 month + teats and they all collapse on him.

If I remeber rightly, they are collapsing because he's sucking too hard. (I'm saying this more for me than you, please bear with me!) So your DS must need more holes so you have done the right thing by going on to more holes. This will mean he takes in more air, so I suppose he may need a bit more of a break. If you gently tug the bottle and he voluntarily lets go, give him a burp, or if he slows down his "chugging" try him.

My youngest is only 8 months but he will not have a bottle! I sometimes wish he would! I'm going back here to DS1 and the knowledge I picked up working in a Nursery. Sorry if I've gone on too long. Blush

Will try but he doesn't usually voluntarily let go !!! likes his grub. :D

when ds was younger tommee tippee and steri bottle teats collapsed so I stuck with avent which were much better. He never had colic but burped loads and still does. Now he does really loud burps and laughs out loud (he's 21m!)

I think avent are anti-colic anyway aren't they? But I have heard Dr Browns bottles are good for colic (which is caused by wind isn't it? Sorry, please correct me if I'm wrong) so I suppose they'd help with wind IYSWIM:)

my "old" midwife told me to make bigger holes in the teats with a hot needle,I found the medium flow teats helped.Winding for ages is still happening,6months later!

JoC76, you can get MAM ultivent bottles which let air out at the bottom. They have their own teats but are interchangeable with the Avent teats. Another suggestion: If you go to www.baby-supplies.co.uk they still have some of the old-style Avent disposable bottles. The "bottle" is a bag which collapses as the baby drinks and theoretically stops them from taking in wind. The teats are different (coloured blue) but are the same size and shape as the normal Avent teats. hth

JoC76 · 16/03/2006 11:15

Thanks for that. I'm going to try the Tommee Tippee variflow teats that they sent me, I got these complimentry because I rang and complained about their collapsing nuby teats. I think the AVENT 3+ months teats are too quick for ds so he was getting more windy therefore upset after feeds.

as far as I remember we used to wind DS every 2 oz, if he had 50z in one go he definatly would have had lots of trapped wind.
We also found giving him some good bacteria once a day helped too. (tasteless powder which you mix with formula or water)
