Can thrush cause baby to scream?

This might sound like the stupidest question on the planet, but be kind I am functioning on the very little sleep!

You lot have been so helpful with advising me on dd and her screaming fits! I thought reflux (silent) perhaps although she doesn't fit all symptoms, or maybe tongue tie (causing gas etc)

She is 4.5 weeks old and and has been really unsettled for about week and half. She was a pretty chilled baby Bere that. She is bottle fed (bf for 5 days).

Anyway she was diagnosed with thrush yesterday (I feel like an idiot, thought only bf babies got thrush). Could this explain the screaming? Sometimes for 2+ hours at a time? Not always linked to feeding, but she often cries during feeds.

GP gave gaviscon as well to rule out reflux.

Yes, thrush in painful; I speak from personal experience, and from watching DD go through it as a toddler. It's nasty!

One piece of advice I was given about thrush was if you're sterilising with Milton, make sure everything's dry before putting it in the baby's mouth, or you can actually sterilise away the natural mouth flora and fauna, making them vulnerable to thrush.

Gaviscon absolutely doesn't rule out reflux. It worked reasonably well for DD but not at all for DS. It's useful for diagnosing a mild case but that's all. And not all reflux babies have the standard symptoms, DS certainly doesn't.

Oh, and congratulations : )

Thanks. I steam sterilise bottles, but have been doing her dummies in Milton, will make sure they are dry.

Ds had reflux and gaviscon didn't work. I will try it and treat thrush and if no change will have a sit in and doctors for referral!

If she has oral thrush she may also have it in her nappy area, which can be horrifically painful whilst urinating or if in contact with poo.
