Is it worth trying different brands of formula?

While holding my screaming 4 week old today, a friend suggested that I try different milk. She is on Hipp organic at moment.

Is it possible it might help? Are they different?

Yes it can. DS1 was constipated with SMA, switched to Aptamil with success. DS2 was on Cow and Gate, had some problems with digestion, switched to C&G comfort, much better.
I guess it depends what you think the problem might be. There might be other solutions to try first.
I would not try a new formula every week though

We ended up trying 3 or 4 different formulas for one reason and another. Not a good idea to switch and change all the time but it's not the end of the world to try another.

We sued Aptamil cos it was pushed on me in hospital when I was fragile, used SMA stay down when first suspected reflux, then normal SMA with gaviscon until they changed the composition, so switched to Cow & Gate with great results. I think it takes about a week for one formula to work it's way out of the system and see a change with the new formula.

As others have said, it is fine to switch formulas. Babies cry for many reasons though, did he just want a cuddle or was overtired? If you think it might be colic have a read of this.

I hold her constantly and put her in sling. She screamed last night for 2.5 hours while we held her, rocked etc.

HV wasn't sure about changing milk, not sure whether to try it.

Did your HV give any reason why she wasn't sure about changing the formula? Did you manage to read the link on colic?

raininginbaltimore · 03/09/2012 20:30

Nope, just said they are all the same. I read it thanks. I am not sure about the colic, mainly as the screaming happens at different times of day, not just evening. So today was 1pm-3pm, then 3.30pm-4.30pm, then from 7pm onwards (Dh has her, although it has just gone quiet)

I have been to GP today and he has given gaviscon to rule out reflux, but he also noticed thrush, so she has something for that too. Could the thrush hav ebeen making her scream?

My DS was like that, crying at random times in the day, ruling out colic. Gaviscon (nor did colief or infacol or cranial osteopathy which incidentally worked wonders for DS1) did not help but the "comfort" milk did. Could be worth a shot.

raininginbaltimore · 04/09/2012 00:33

We did try comfort milk, but after a day I was sure she seemed I'm more discomfort. I probably should have tried for longer.
