I prepped DD's afternoon bottle at midday, I put it in ice and water to cool, intending to put it in the fridge.

But I forgot. DH only told me after I had fed her that he'd taken the bottle from the bowl of water, not the fridge. I am now in a cold sweat.

I am trying to reassure myself that

  • the bottle was properly clean and sterile
  • I made it up with water just off the boil (it's comfort milk so needs hotter water to make it dissolve)
  • there was a LOT of ice in the water
  • when I checked the water afterwards, it was still very cold; def colder than the cold tap
  • it was less than 4 hrs since I'd prepared it and the WHO guidelines say you can keep a bottle in a chiller bag for 4 hrs and I think the icy water was probably colder than sitting in a chiller

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgh!

Please tell me it will be ok and that I haven't just fed my DD something that's going to make her ill....

I'll be completely honest now... we make up the bottles at the start of the day and sometimes I dont refridgerate them at all. We sterilise every 24hrs and our home is cool by some standards (well under 23c normally). I do sometimes put them in the fridge but if I forget I dont panic. DC is fine never been a problem. As you say you sterilised the bottle, boiled the water, plus am sure formula goes through so many cleansing processes from the time it comes from the cow that it is practically sterile anyway. Dont worry :)

It'll be fine, don't panic x

Niggle the formula powder isn't sterile, so that is why it needs to be made up with very hot water.

However OP, you made the formula up hot enough to hopefully kill any bacteria, and then it was kept cool so any bacteria present is unlikely to be able to multiply. I think the milk will be absolutely fine!

The risk is when the powder is made up with cool water (so the powder isn't sterilised) and then the warm milk is left at room temp.

PHEW!

Thank you so much, very reassuring.

I am afraid DD is PFB so I am new to all this and neurotic! A very bad combination Grin

Thank you for your posts, they have got me off the ceiling calmed me down

Xx

Sounds fine to me. How old is DD though, guess I may be a little freaked if she was a couple of days old or something. Otherwise, nah.

Ginshizz · 02/09/2012 20:50

She'll be 16 weeks on Tuesday ... So not very grown up but not teeny...

Quick update for anyone still following: all seems to be ok! DD is fine, no sign of a poorly tummy and her appetite is still enormous!

Thanks all for your reassurance

Thanks
