Vomiting baby, not interested in feeding

I was pleased that EBF DS (9 weeks) had 'slept through' the night - 10pm - 6am. However, he fed at 6am and slept till 10am when I woke him up to feed - he wasnt very interested. He's since vomited all of those feeds. Proper sick, not 'possetting'. He was also sick in the evening yesterday and I can't be sure he's fed since then. He's not a sicky baby at all.

No temperature. Sleeping again on me. He had a very small feed about half an hour ago. I've just tried to feed him again but he won't. I was hoping to feed every half hour so that he might take small feeds and keep them down.

How long should we leave this? Wish it wasn't Sunday. Our GP is great but the OOH service awful.

Ring NHS direct for advice NOW please, not worth taking any risks with a tiny baby. Is there a children's a&e in your area or a GP drop in you could get to? Hope baby is better soon x

Hi there, we've moved this into Breast and Bottle Feeding now. Thanks.

BeaWheesht · 02/09/2012 12:50

NHS direct, when did he last have a wet nappy? Is his fontanelle sunken at all?

Breast and Bottle Feeding? Confused This needs to be in health

You need to get your baby checked over. Have you called NHS direct?

belindarose · 02/09/2012 13:06

I asked for it to be moved, because I thought more people with younger babies posted here. Have called nhs direct and ooh and am waiting for calls back. He has fed again for a couple of minutes and kept it down so far. He's still having wet nappies. Will only feed from one breast so wondering if he's in pain when he lies on the other side.

Have you checked the top of his head? It should be flat, not bulging or sunken.

idlevice · 02/09/2012 13:48

Keep trying small frequent feeds as even if it is vomitted up, some will be absorbed. I would go to A&E by evening if no improvement or no joy from the other places you have tried. Or obviously go earlier if it gets worse. Have you checked for rashes?

Do you know anyone that might have had a bug? DS2 had nori virus at 7wks but also had diarrhoea. He had to be hydrated via a nasal gastric tube but could still feed. I pumped a bit to keep up supply. Hopefully it won't be as bad as that for you, they are great with small babies in hospitals.

belindarose a young baby vomitting and not feeding needs a medical opinion, Sunday or no Sunday.

Don't try to diagnose dehydration by feeling the fontanelle - that's for experts, and even they find it tricky.

belindarose · 02/09/2012 19:38

DH is a Dr, tiktok and he said he wouldn't try to assess with the fontanelle.

We've seen OOH Dr. DS had managed a few feeds by then, hasn't been sick since this morning and has wet nappies, so she said he was fine to bring home and just keep feeding when he wants to.

I'm still not happy with his feeding, he's screaming when put to the breast and certainly hasn't shown any signs of 'asking' to be fed all day. I've tried to feed while he's asleep, which has worked a bit.

Hope things get better today, belindarose. Not a good idea to do any 'fighting' with your baby to get her on....just keep her close and let her come back in her own time :)

Interesting your dh says that about the fontanelle. It worries me when this is mentioned in babycare books and on mumsnet - assessing a fontanelle is not a handy trick anyone can do, because babies' fontanelles are soft anyway. An obviously bulging fontelle can be normal sometimes, but it is a sign that needs checking out esp if the baby shows other signs of illness. Whatever. Not for amateurs to judge :)

belindarose · 03/09/2012 10:45

Thanks, tiktok. He fed nicely overnight and is more wakeful today. Postponing his vaccinations due today though. You're right about the 'fighting', I know, it just makes him crosser. I'm still not hugely confident in interpreting his cues even when well.

Glad to hear he is a bit better, I wondered how he was - hope he's back to himself ASAP! X
