Things I had forgotten about breastfeeding!

How pink your nipples get!
How much time you spend feeding a newborn.
How snuggly and nice it is, especially feeding in bed.
The endorphin rush - if you could bottle that feeling you'd be a millionaire!

How much I like it. It's one of the best bits about having a new baby, and one of the things that makes it all worthwhile for me.

I loved the little birdy mouth dd made when she was hungry, the way she used to break off to smile at me and the contented little sigh she gave when she had creamy milk all round her mouth.

And now she's a bit older (13 months), she makes me laugh when she unceremoniously latches herself on, takes her fill, and goes off to do something more interesting instead!

We had a bit of a hard time with my ds (now 8 months). It's a long story and I've posted on it elsewhere. The one shining light was the bfing. It just went so well!! He was described by the midwife as a "natural" feeder. Reading this thread makes me realise that I was really blessed to have been able to care for my ds in this way. Didn't get a lot of the "snuggly" bits that everyone else has been talking about (ds was crying and screaming most of the time for the first few months). But I used to love the "drunk" expression on his face after a big feed. Stopped bfing about 5 weeks ago and do miss it sometimes.

Last night I was feeding dd2 (now 5.5 weeks) in bed. I woke up about 15 mins later to find her asleep, one nipple still in her mouth, other nipple grasped firmly in her hand as if she was saying 'mineminemine!'

My dh told me that he often woke in the night to find dd in bed with us, feeding contentedly, and both she and me fast asleep. They were probably the easiest feeds!

This is such a great thread to read while having to express at work
I like the cheeky sidelong look I get from dd when the bra or nightie is undone and those milky smirks afterwards. I love smelling her breath after a good feed too...
As I never managed natural delivery of either ds and dd I have to confess that for me successful b/f has also been about proving to myself that my body can manage some parts of the mothering process properly.

thanks for reminding me, marina

Super thread! I especially love when she comes off with a lip smack, eyes closed, nose red and those little red marks around her mouth from a long feed...bliss!

Wills · 02/02/2004 09:30

I love this thread. Even though I've been battling thrush (and its not pleasant) this thread sums up beautifully why I can't bear to give up when to most people I must be mad.

Here's my bit. dd2's open "starling" like mouth when I lay her down into position with her head lifting up desperate to latch on. The contended guzzling and lip smacking. Her smell generally. The happy drunk look she gets when she comes off fullup. The possessive smile she gives me when I strip off for a bath. The patting on the breast whilst feeding and the post pink cheeks. Oh I could go on and on but you've all summed it up.

suzywong · 02/02/2004 09:34

That's a very good point Marina
I didn't pop my sons out either so maybe that is why I am so proud of my self for BFing. Never thought of that.

She latched onto me once when I was pulling her pyjama trousers up - just dangling in the air she was! I love making her smile or even laugh while feeding, and she still looks surprised that the nipple isn't there any more. And I still love thinking that even at 9 months and on solisds - 80 or 90 % of her has come from me.

(and the day I expressed 13oz in one sitting I loved working out that this was nearly 400 calories!!)

hercules · 14/02/2004 19:48

Just wanted to add how much i love it when cosleeping dd at night on the bed stirs slightly and opens her mouth for a feed without opening her eyes as she knows i'll be there (unless something good on tv

Hi hercules

have been watching cc debate and decided to steer clear - find all this gina ford stuff bit scary.

I love waking with DD2 - she smiles when she opens her eyes and it's wonderful. bed not big enough for all of us, so DD1 in junior bed and daddy in our bed and me and DD2 on sifabed. bit of heaven for a very short while but heaven it is.

Jx

hercules · 18/03/2004 16:47

Our bed is 6foot by 6 foot so huge although dh is at work now in the nights and ds (8) is in his own room now. Just dd and me

susanmt · 20/03/2004 23:12

Dd2 is now 16 weeks and has started reaching out for things and holding on to things - so now, especially at bedtime, she 'hugs' my breast while she is feeding. I ended up crying with happiness watching her tonight before she went to bed!

I love this thread

...that when they feel rotten and are snuffly and achey and exhausted, that nothing else will do.

(no offence to bottle feeders, this is just my experience of my kids)

lou33 · 20/03/2004 23:20

Susan, that is so lovely .
