I want to do some kind of breastfeeding training/support work in Bristol...

Does anyone have any ideas about how best to go about it? I did contact someone (NHS or NCT - can't remember) about peer support training some time ago but they weren't terribly interested in me as I worked part time and didn't live in a target area.

I am now a SAHM and only have some general knowledge about breastfeeding and my own experience of feeding ds for just over a year - but I do feel quite passionate about helping other mums.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sorry, can't help but am in Bristol too and have wondered about doing this, especially now youngest is in preschool.

My NCT branch would bite your arm off!

Have you asked your health visitor? Mine knows all that kind of stuff.

It's Barnardos you want for Bristol. Number to call on the link for potential trainees.

Ah yes, it was Barnados I contacted before! They kind of grudgingly agreed I could do it if I could get time off work in the mornings and would travel to a target area (Southmead, Hartcliffe, Avonmouth and a couple of others iirc). I wonder if there was any other way to do this or if the official NHS/Barnados programme was it.

I'm in north Bristol and our sure start centre bf group has an nct bf counsellor co-leading there must be demand across Bristol for such people?

Rubirosa · 29/08/2012 19:47

Bristol seems to have quite high numbers of breastfeeders so I would have thought there would be call for it - I certainly met more bfers than ffers when ds was a baby. But I never went to any bf groups and never met anyone who saw a counsellor or peer supporter Confused

Peer support schemes tend to be targetted to the areas with the lowest rates. ABM training is distance learning and can be done anywhere. NCT and LLL have branches all over, so might be possible to do BFC or LLL leader training. Not sure whether there are any BfN in Bristol, but you could email and ask.
