Hi all,

My dd is 9 weeks old today and is predominantly breast fed with one or two bottles of Farley's first milk a day as a top up.

I'm taking her to Portugal in four weeks and am trying to find out whether I can get Farley's milk in Portugal, ideally the ready made variety in view of the water situation(my HV says that there is only evian water you can use safely).

Does anyone know if Farley's milk is available in Portugal? The ready made tubs weigh 1/4 of a kilo each and dd doesn't get any weight allowance for her stuff as it is. Smile
Also, dd is starting to teeth (early I know) and I am concerned about bf her when her tooth comes through. Do you ladies have any tips? Any advice on either/both situations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ange
What is wrong with the water? I'm surprised there would be a problem, esp when boiled. Anyway, I don't know if they sell the formula you use but was just going to say that teething can start a long, long time before any teeth actually appear. My DD showed signs of teething at around 3 months and she still hasn't had any break through at 9 months - so it might be that there's nothing to worry about for now. If they do come, or if she bites down with those hard gums, some MNers have said to bring the baby towards your breast (I think their nose pressing against you makes them open their mouths but not sure if I'm remembering correctly) and some have said a firm 'no' and taking the baby off the breast helps.

Is \link{http://www.britsuperstore.com/acatalog/Farleys_Baby_Milk.html\this} any good for you?

We dont have it in Spain but will have a look to see if I can find anything in similar packaging. Things often have a different name, for example Dodot is Pampers. i think jmg1 is in portugal, so you could put out a shout for him.

oops, forgot to say - wonder if you could have it delivered to your hotel/villa? Grin

I am in portugal Ange and I dont believe I have ever seen it. They have a large selection of things for babies though - I could nip to the shop and look for you. Is Farleys milk a powder formula or a normal Milk? (so I know where to look) also, what is it so I can see if they have something similar for you.

ange8179 · 14/03/2006 19:28

Hi all and thanks for your responses.

Farleys milk is a powdered baby milk that you usually make up with water. However, my HV said there is a problem with the mineral content of the water and that dd is likely to get tummy pain/ a tummy bug if I use the water in Portugal.

The link on the webpage would be good if I could arrange a guaranteed delivery for when I'm in Portugal.

Insofar as teething is concerned, I'm hoping her tooth doesn't come through for a while. Smile

Thanks everyone so far for your feedback.

Ange, could you not just breastfeed her? If you fed often between now and then you could build up your supply? Breastfeeding is so much handier on hols.

ange8179 · 18/03/2006 21:38

Hi,
I thought about exclusively bf her as an option. Think we may try and build it up for that extra feed. DD takes about 4 oz of formula so I guess will try expressing between feeds (is that how you build it back up)?

God,I'd up the b/feeding or it's going to be such a faff.
I've travelled a lot and let me tell you,b/feeding has kept me sane amidst all the bags, nappies, flight changes and hours in airport!

chipmonkey · 18/03/2006 22:58

You could express between feeds, Ange, but its way easier just to feed more often and for longer. 4 oz really isn't that much either, shoudn't take too long to build up. I'd only express if you have to spend time away from her. Do you work outside the home?

ange8179 · 19/03/2006 11:53

Hi,

I don't have to work outside home again until September so bf her exclusive wouldn't be too much problem. Think I'll go for that and try and build up the stocks Grin.

Thanks for all your help Smile.

Am going to Portugal later this week for 7 nights. Same situation - mostly bf-ing but giving one bottle of formula (C&G Organic) a day. Will be taking ready-made boxes, but will keep an eye out for Farley's First for you, and will post message at end of month on this thread if I find anything out.
HTH.

ange8179 · 20/03/2006 20:38

Thanks for that. Have a good holiday. Smile

i took my dd to spain when she was 5 months old and was still b/feeding. took my pump and expressed bottle to take out in evening, although i suspect the portugese are a lot less hung up about public b/feeding than us brits.
mothercare and boots do steriliser bags which take up no room at all in your case and you just throw them away each day, i took to lots so had 1 for pump and bits, then 1 for bottles etc.
IMO if you start expressing now you can build your supply. i found that if i expressed approx 1 hour after feed (side not fed from) and try a bit of nipple manipulation Blush this would trigger a let down reflex and i could 4oz in 1 sitting.
also we just bought bottled water over there then boiled it, make sure kettle/pan spotless cos ours was rancid.
have a fab time.
we are off to portugal sunday morning Grin

shout out to nickinha, do you live in portugal? we hiring a car for 4 days looking at resorts/properties. please cat me if you do xx
