Breastfeeding beyond one year... help needed

TheBlonde · 14/03/2006 13:04

DS is 13 mths now. Mostly breastfed plus 1-2 bottles of formula a day.

Now I know I can give cows milk now and I should be giving a cup.

But how, when??

Should I give milk in a cup or water?

Offer either, see if he'll take it?

You can also stop with the formula and give cow's milk in its place. If he doesn't like straight cow's milk, initially, you can blend cow's milk and formula, and reduce the amount of formula, over time.

starlover · 14/03/2006 14:36

just swap the formula for cows milk.. either in bottle or in a cup if he'll take it.

we've jhust put Linus back onto half formula half cows as the straight cows milk was making him really constipated!

I personally don't see what all the fuss is about giving a cup, if he still prefers the bottle then cut yourselves some slack and let him have the bottle. Sippy cup for water is a good idea though.

I got ds2 onto cows milk at 12 months, he had just bf til then, by giving it to him when I took him round the block in his buggy as a prelude to his nap.

Are you still going to BF at night?

Hayls · 14/03/2006 14:51

I tried and tried but dd would never drink either formula or cows milk. FWIW, I tried giving her milk or water at various intervals and she woudl drink the water but never the milk. I thin kI tried every cuip you can buy. I stopped bf at 18 months and assumed she would drink a cup of milk at bedtime but...no. She still doesn't EVER drink milk at 2.2 yrs but is apparently healthy so I don't worry.
Probably doesn't help you at all but don't worry if he doesn't take to it. Though you could probably gradually replace the bottles of formula with bottles of cows milk>

I am still breastfeeding about 5 times a day

Dd would never take formula, but will have a little cows milk. From a taste perspective, I can see what cows milk might be more palatable. So much more convenient than faffing around with formula as well.

TheBlonde, just offer cows milk in a cup and see if ds takes to it? Otherwise, cows milk in a bottle. Offer water in a cup though or at least a beaker, so he can get some practice.

TheBlonde · 14/03/2006 21:48

This might be a stupid question but what temperature do you serve the cow's milk at?

OP posts:
starlover · 14/03/2006 21:50

i usually warm it...

am still at a loss as to how to travel with it if i'm out all day though!

mojomummy · 14/03/2006 22:21

that's an awful lot of milk ? 5 bf feeds + 1-2 bottles of formula ?

When Dd was that age she had bf morning & night & bottle at 2:30pm.

She had milk in a sippy cup at 2:30 & I wished I'd kept it up because she still has milk in a bottle now - the night-time one (then I clean her teeth of course)

My friends little boy is 10 mths & he has formula in a Boots green sippy cup, if that's any help.

milward · 15/03/2006 09:41

I bf mine over one year. I gave them water at meals & mixed cows milk with nesquick (bad I know - but they loved it!)

milward · 15/03/2006 09:42

... just to say that I bf on demand day & night! they bf loads but was fine.

blueshoes · 15/03/2006 09:44

Don't think it is too much milk. Depends on how much solids TheBlonde's ds is taking, I guess, and how much milk is consumed at each feed. My dd wasn't eating much solids at 13 months. She still b-fed a lot during the day but little and often, a lot of it for comfort as well.

TheBlonde, I would try serving the cow's milk at fridge temperature. If ds takes it, great. Otherwise you would want to heat it up to see if that goes down better. Make life easier for yourself, is my motto Smile

He's having 3 meals a day but they are pretty small. I'm trying to up the solids but he's not too keen

I offered a cup of water with his lunch and he had a few swigs Smile
