Silent reflux - comfort formula or reflux formula?

I think dd has silent reflux. Ds had reflux, but was very sick. She is 3.5 weeks old and has many symptoms, including squirming and looking in pain when feeding, a cough, screaming, hates being put down.

She is ff, currently on Hipp organic. Someone on another thread suggested comfort milk, but I notice they now make reflux milk (cow and gate / aptamil)

Which might be better? I assume the reflux one is just thicker. What is comfort like?

I will go to docs, but can't get an appointment until Thursday.

wait untill you see your Gp before changing. Its great there are formulas for reflux now.

I just want to help her now. GP will give gaviscon, which is fairly useless. Then I will have get another appointment to start badgering them. With ds it took 5 months. They kept sending me away.

Don't know anything about the reflux milk sorry. I did use the comfort milk though (probably posted on your other thread!) I don't really see why you need to see doctor. I just tried it and very quickly noticed a difference in ds. He was calmer, and much easier to feed and settle. If you are desperate I would give it a go. The milk itself looks more yellows and is thicker. When I used it you couldn't buy the ready made cartons it was sold as a powder milk, but you make it up in exactly the same way.

Comfort milk is not really for reflux but hit colic and constipation. It is easier to digest. Reflux milk is thickened and do helps it to stay down. I use gaviscon and it goes help my lo. It helps keep it down and contains a mild antacid. I don't think using gaviscon with the above milks is a great idea though as either you are advised not to or it makes it too thick !

Other option is to add carobel thickener to your normal milk. Yes gp prob will gaviscon at first but if it doesn't work you will then be given stronger meds such as ranitidine

My ds had ranitadine and domperidone. Gaviscon was fairly useless for him.

DH bought comfort milk as they only sell reflux one at big boots stores. The comfort has less lactose and is thicker, so might help.

See how you get on with it but I found comfort milk made her worse as it separated out in her tummy and she kept bringing up the watery bit. I only gave it about 6 days then switched back to aptamil 1st.

So far the gaviscon is managing things for us but if it doesn't last may opt to try cranial osteopathy and then ask for more meds if no joy ...

Good luck x

I did cranial osteopathy with ds. I know some people swear by it, and but I think it is a load of woo!

Fair comment. I am in two minds- but rather give it a whirl before complicating things with more meds. Hoping the gaviscon will work for now as it had stopped but just upped dose as over 10lb and not too bad at mo - fingers crossed :-)

I'd try comfort milk and get an emergency appointment at the GP and demand the meds. Explain your history and write out the symptoms.

I had exactly the same - ds had silent reflux and it took 4 appointments with 4 different GPs. Dd, my second, had it and I recognised it immediately. The GP tried to fob me off but I insisted and saw another GP who I knew would prescribe the medication.

Hi ... sorry to hear you think baby might have reflux, my first had very bad reflux and we were seen regularly by the perdiatrican at the hospital, he was on gaviscon and Domperidone, but neither really helped... but he stayed on them until weening.... i think altho might not seem to help with the sickness if might help them feel a bit better.... its certainly worth a try. My little girl then had reflux but wasnt half as bad as first, she was on Gaviscon to... we tried all the off the counter stuff and it was all pretty useless, although some people swear by them !!!... its a case of trial and error. My HV didn't advise comfort milk, as its thicker .... also i think from memory its hard for them to get out of the bottle as you ight need teets with bigger holes !. x
