Can a breastfed newborn put on too much weight?

Ds2 was born 10 days ago weighing 10 pounds 5 ounces. He was weighed today by the midwife and now weighs 11 pounds. Midwife looked shocked and commented that normally they hope they have regained their birthweight by this point. Just wanted to check that I have no reason to be concerned?

No!
Sounds brill.
My ds put on about this much in the same period of time.
You are obviously producing gold top quality. Well Done!!

Same scales? Mine appeared to put on about 7 ozs (I think) in first week/10 days but really not sure that was accurate.

Marina · 13/03/2006 15:24

Scales wobble, I bet. But in the right direction, which is very good.

expatinscotland · 13/03/2006 15:24

NO! Mine weighs 14 lbs. at 3 months. She was born at 6lbs., 9 oz.

JoolsToo · 13/03/2006 15:26

surely its impossible for bf babes to be fat! Wink

congrats on the new baby anchovies Smile he was a hefty one eh? well done!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/03/2006 15:28

DD gained a good few ounces - 9 i think in her first 12 days. She was born at 9lb 13oz

pooka · 13/03/2006 15:34

Dd and ds both put on 8oz in the first week. dd was 6 10 at birth and ds 7 14.

UlyseesEggsAndEatsThem · 13/03/2006 15:41

Not in my opinion. Congratulations by the way Smile

I was talking to a friend recently who's 2 year old is a stocky lad like his dad. He was solely breastfed for months and piled it on. The HV had a go even asking what the mother was eating?? luckily she's has 2 other dds and smartly told her that when she'd given birth herself then she could come round and start giving her advice!

I know you aren't getting grief over this anchovies but I was shocked by this.

gemmamay · 13/03/2006 15:41

My DD was 1lb heavier by the time the mdwife discharged us (so aboout 10 days old) she carried on like it for a few weeks. she was 6lb 15oz when she was born.

agalch · 13/03/2006 15:51

Neither of my bf babies lost any weight after birth and put on tons of weight,my hv actually asked me if i was giving my month old baby solids??? wtf? as if i would, she just couldn't believe a baby who was "only" bf could gain so fast.

moondog · 13/03/2006 15:53

God,that is so thick agalch.

harpsichordcarrier · 13/03/2006 15:53

Shock no of course not
my dd2 regained her birthweight in 7 days. big fat raspberry to all the mw's who told me I couldn't possibly tandem feed her and dd1.
congrats anchovies on your five star milk.

agalch · 13/03/2006 16:12

Thick is right lol. I am waiting to see how much weight no4 who is due in July might put on. Hows the tandem feeding going harpsichordcarrier? I feel i may also be a tandem feeder soon Grin.Mind if i ask how old your eldest is,mines will be 2 when baby arrives.Did you find you fed eldest more often when lo came along/

Kelly1978 · 13/03/2006 16:14

my older two both did the same, the hv was convinced I was sneaking bottles into them. The dts didn't but I guess feeding two was harder.

Flamesparrow · 13/03/2006 16:37

Mine had put on loads by day 5, and had evened out to going from 8lb 5 at birth, to 9lb 1 at 11 13 days (the bulk was in those first 5 days)... never lost anything as far as I could tell.

They just don't give breastmilk the credit it deserves!!

milward · 13/03/2006 16:39

Good going - my dd3 had regained her birth weight & more on day 3 & my ds4 (who weighed in at 4.570kgs) only lost 70g & was over 5 kilos at his 2 week check-up!! best wishes xxx

harpsichordcarrier · 13/03/2006 18:09

(Agalch tandem feeding goes very well thanks for asking. dd1 was 2.5 when dd2 was born. She fed about the same amount (three times a day) but asked to go on occasionally but not really feeding as such. I think she might be taking more volume though - she often talks in approving tones about there being loads and loads of milk now...)

SoupDragon · 13/03/2006 18:14

Just be proud of yourself :) All of my bf babies used to pile on at least half a pound a week and DD is no exception. She was 8lb 10oz at birth and 10lb 6oz at 3 weeks.

Have to say I've always had a little niggle at the back of my mind wondering if you could over feed a bf baby but for the most part I was happy that you couldn't.
