Is it ok to express pre birth leaky boobs?

I failed to bf my first DD (various factors, mostly rubbish support in the crucial days) and am now 37 weeks pregnant with DD2.

I've bought a Medela pump and tonight I've started leaking colostrum, tiny amounts but that never happened in my first pregnancy so am a bit excited about it!! Ridiculous, I know.

Anyway, would it harm me or my supply if I test out my new pump on myself now, just to get the hang of it etc.. Or an I best leaving my boobs alone till after I've given birth?

Leave alone Smile

Baby needs that colostrum when born and you don't want to bring your milk in before baby arrives Smile

I wouldn't as it can bring on labour!

I'm sure it's fine you if you want to...read the excellent info on this thread-

Best not to use your machine and remember your only likely to get very little.

You can't make your milk come in before the baby is born - that's triggered by the removal of the placenta. So if you manage to remove that by pumping, boy that's one powerful pump Wink

I am doing ante-natal expression of colostrum as a 'just in case' measure and I'm 36 weeks but it's generally recommended to hand express due to the low volumes of colostrum that's made (which is fine as baby's tummy is very small too - 5-7mls on day one).

I am also bfing DD3 and she's not 'stealing' her unborn sister's colostrum as it won't run out (luckily Grin). Our bodies are pretty clever with milk production.

I'll be expressing pre-birth too. The hormones rush is the same as if you have sex, so if your ok for sex, you're ok to express! There is no finite supply of colostrum, you will make as much as you need, otherwise those poor little twins wouldn't stand a chance!

DD is still feeding from me, it hasn't ran out yet, although I'm not sure when it came in ;)

Excuse my ignorance, learn something new every day Smile

Fish arefriends :) its ok, I thought the same till I got pg with my second and DD was still feeding. Its a really common misconception, although a quick google shows many NHS trusts are working to correct it too :) i got told the same in my first pregnancy, and felt horribly guilty when I tried out my breast pump at 35 weeks and got loads off lol!
