Toddler milk confusion.

My dd is coming up to the one year mark soon when I can think about not sterilising etc. Obviously her feeds are currently Made up with hot water. I was presuming coming yo the year u may not have to do that anymore?!

Anyway today I read a 1-2 year milk instructions and it basically said the following...

You baby couks become Ill if you do not follow correct procedure
Measure 5oz BOILED,COOLED water.
Add 5 scoops, shake well, drink immediately.
Do not refrigerate.

So a few questions here. Why does it emphasise your baby could be ill, if your not using hot water to kill any bacteria? And why can't you use Tap water if babies can have it dtriaght out of the tsp at 6 months?! And why can it not be fridged, like infant milk, for 12 hours?
So when I move over, do I literally want to be boiling the kettle first thing, measuring the water out, and adding the powder as i require the feed?! So should of just kept breastfeeding! Such less grief :)
Thanks everybody xx

if you are using dried milk formula, you need to kill any bacteria with freshly boiled water, you are right

if she is nearly a year, can she not have cows milk?

also, you don't need to sterilise the bottles etc. anymore, but the milk powder can still have the potential to give her a tummy bug

raininginbaltimore · 24/08/2012 06:23

At 1 year she can have cows milk, she doesn't need formula.

It still needs to be hot as the powder still might have bacteria like salmonella in it.

Pascha · 24/08/2012 06:24

I don't know about formula at all but all the bottlefed babies I have known have just moved onto ordinary cows milk at a year. Is there any reason you need to keep buying formula now?

NoGoodAtHousework · 24/08/2012 06:25

The 1 year plus formula is a rip off, she can have ordinary milk.

TittyBojangles · 24/08/2012 06:33

Yep, another vote for cows milk here.

ChuggaChuggaChooChoo · 24/08/2012 07:05

We went on to cows milk at 1yr too. The only assertions that formula is better were written by the formula manufacturers - it is marketing and advertising dressed up as fact, ignore it.

MigGril · 24/08/2012 07:54

Its not the water that's the problem the milk powder hasn't been treated to kill the bacteria that may be in it. Bacteria from the manufacturing process, you handling it and an open packet being sat in your cupboard are all sources of contamination.

As others have said unless there is a specific dirty need she can have full fast cows milk from 12 months.

Tangointhenight · 24/08/2012 08:04

My DD is a year next month and I'm counting the days to just giving her cows milk, no more standing with powder and water from kettle!!

Also you didn't need to sterilise from 6 months.

Toddler milk is a take on, if your DC has a balanced diet then they don't need all the vitamins it's fortified with, I give my baby vitamins anyway.

The hot water is there to kill bugs in the powder, also they don't recommend you keep made up bottles of infant milk in the fridge at all, should be made fresh to order like toddler milk.

Make sure you have a look at the packaging and ingredients, a lot of the brands add vanilla to the milk!! I think if I started giving DD that she would never drink cows milk so have a look, I think hipp organic is the only one that doesn't add a vanilla flavouring.

holler · 24/08/2012 08:19

We stopped sterilising at 6 months, moved to cows milk at 1 year, and got rid of all bottles at 18 mo (she has a beaker of milk in the morning). I was SO happy to get shot of the bottles until next time.

Mjtay · 25/08/2012 08:17

Thank you all so much for your replies, and my apologies for the delay. I'm avoiding cows milk as I'm sure she has a sensitivity. When she was 6 months she ended up on comfort milk and treatment for reflux ( that's what dr thought) after having given her cows milk in her porridge. She seemed to develop a problem with her formula. Has Been on comfort milk till now.

Everything has settled down but I want to change her milk so I can get her back on avent bottles ( for ease of cleaning when I'm not sterilising) as it is too thick, so using dr browns.

I have actually last 2 days taken her back to aptimil and Been to hell and back, so think I can safely say there is definately a lactose problem, so No no to cows milk! :(

It Is still confusing me tho as the packaging definately stated COOLED boiled water, So would not kill anything. But did say further down if using hot water, be careful not to scald. Which is obvious.

I guess it's irrelevant now, but just bugging me! Thank you for the comment about vanilla, my friends did smell of milkshake powder!!!

So my next question is does anyone know another bottle that teat has one big hole rather than 4 little ones, to accommodate thicker fluid.

Also is there anything wrong in adding hot water to kill the bacteria, and then topping up with cold Tap water to cool?!
Thank you everyone xx

Op I do what you just suggested DD still has a bottle at night Blush and we use aptamil toddler milk made we hot water then topped up with cold wAter and have never had any problems.

TruthSweet · 25/08/2012 08:53

'Comfort' infant formula milk is made from cows milk and will still contain lactose as well as cows' milk protein, though the protein is partially hydrolysed (partially broken down) that the manufacturers say make it slightly easier to digest. It's not suitable for lactose intolerant or cows' milk intolerant babies/children though, that would be a 'milk' like Neocate, Nutrimigen, etc. To the best of my knowledge there isn't currently a 'comfort' follow on milk on the UK as both available ones were discontinued in the last few years. More details on formula milks here.

Tangointhenight · 25/08/2012 11:03

Yes I was going to say that comfort milk still has lactose, perhaps she is allergic to dairy? Have you tried her with yogurt or cheese? In that case i would speak to your GP, you could perhaps use a soya alternative or dairy free milk like that.

Mjtay · 25/08/2012 11:05

Pleased to hear that steben, just seems to make sense as they can have tapwater now. Thank u.

Thank you truthsweet. The problems all started after cows milk in her porridge. It was like a switch. Throwing herself backwards in pain after her bottles. Under dr guidance we tried comfort, then soya, but the soya was just as bad. Dr seemed to think there was no other option, but now realise there are alternatives, but she seems ok on the comfort. But don't know how long she can have it for. Thinking of seeing a paediatrician to figure out exactly what it is she struggles with. Like could she have lactose reduced cows milk!? Dr doesnt think she's intolerant as such as her weight gain is perfect and she's thriving. Ho hum!!

Any ideas about teats?! Xxx

Mjtay · 25/08/2012 11:08

All that said, she's fine with yogurt and cheese! Last 2 nights back on regular formula, her tummy Is really gargley, like she produces So much air (but been well burped before bed) and cries in her sleep and wriggles and passes alot of wind in the morning. Xxx

vodkaanddietirnbru · 25/08/2012 11:12

avent do variable flow teats that can be used for thicker liquids - they have a slit rather than holes. You could try Lactofree cows milk and see if that affects him.

Tangointhenight · 25/08/2012 11:18

Maybe her body has just gotten used to the comfort milk? So a switch is always going to upset her perhaps, goats milk has reduced lactose in comparison to cows milk I think. Has your GP ever referred her to a dietician?

Mjtay · 25/08/2012 11:25

Tango, I was trying to give her a few days to try settle, but 3 sleepless nights and seeing her in so much pain is unbearable, so hubby was out at 24hr Asda at 5 this morn ready for her morning bottle! I think I will try get her refered, thanks vodka, I reckon once she's 1 in 3 weeks I'll have a good with that. I'll look for variflow when I'm out today then. Thanks xx

Poor wee pet I hope you get some answers!

steben · 25/08/2012 16:23

Just to add my dd who is 2.4 now is on the formula toddler milk because she doesn't seem as happy with cows milk bottles - she has it with her cereal and us fine but in large drinking quantities it just doesn't seem to agree with her! Having said that she only has one bottle per evening. What I would say is that if she is happy with being on the toddler milk and you are happy giving it to her stick with it - it won't do her any harm and if you ate happy to buy it then it is fine! Also for why it is worth we kept dd on the stage 3 (also same brand as you) she was 18 months!

Mjtay · 26/08/2012 13:43

Thank you steben! Well were back on comfort milk with variflow teats and that seems fine. I don't see how comfort milk can do her Any damage, apart from being too calorific?! I'll speak to hv on her year check about lactofree. The change has upset her system a little with the change. But definately less pain now. Poor bub. Thank u for all ur help. Xxx

'Comfort milk' is cow's milk formula with potato starch in it to slow the flow thru the teat.

It has no magical proerties at all. As others have said , 'Toddler milk' is totally unnecessary. Fresh whole milk is good nutrition. It's cheap, convenient and tastes much nicer!

Perhaps dd's reaction was a one off and may not have been a reaction to the milk - even if it was , she is older now so her gut may have matured ?

Mjtay · 27/08/2012 06:59

Thanks finally. That's what I was hoping, but we had exactly the same reaction when we changed, and am still facing the consequences now :( my wonderful sleeping thro baby, has turned into a very uncomfortable, up all night version :( x
