Changing formula

I've got a 5 week old ds who is screaming after almost every feed in the day like he has belly ache or wind or colic, he is on SMA gold at the minute but we are thinking of changing him to see if its the formula making him like this. Would anyone recommend this if so to which formula? I am gonna ask hv but just wanted some mumsnetters opinions as well.

we tried changing dd's formual once and it made her vomit so we changed back again. I would certainly get HV's opinion first to rule anything else out. Colic is something that most babies get so it might not be anything to do with the formula. have you tried dentinox colic relief? you add it to the bottle which made it easier for us administer and much easier than the pipets that come with other brands.

We used to swap DD's formula around regularly. Just bought whichever one was on the shelf, but usually it was SMA. She never noticed a difference. With DS, he was mix fed on breast and SMA to start with. And I noticed he wasn't settling very well, so I swapped for Aptimil. It seemd better. Perhaps a coincidence? He is now 9 1/2 months and we swap around, esp. if we find one on sale.

However, I once had a dog who would get the runs if I switched her food. Smile

Hi jo789

I've just been through several weeks of what you're describing where I eventually thought I'd change my DD's formula from Aptimal to Omeneo Comfort. This didn't help and resulted in us spending the entire weekend at the hospital with her. Just as you describe, she screamed after each feed, was extremely windy and you could hear her cry was a distressed one, very different from colic (which she's had and my previous daughter also had so I knew it wasn't colic). The paed diagnosed reflux and we've had her on medication for the last 48 hours and I've got my sweet-natured little baby back, who's not in any pain. She's a little older than your babe (11 weeks) but she was prem so if you adjust her age she's actually only 6 weeks.

Another thing to bear in mind, is that colic does peak at around 6 - 8 weeks but as I said earlier, I knew it wasn't colic in our case.
Hope that is of some help. I know exactly what you're going through and it's very, very hard!

by the way we're back on Aptimal as the Omneo makes her more windy and the paed felt that Aptimal was better for her

I put my dd on SMA Gold to when she 1st came and she had bad colic and conspitation and I spoke to my sister in law who found the small with her dd and I change over to cow and gate premium and it did work she was much better on it. With my ds who is more colicly than my dd, he is very greedy! We put him on cow and gate premium but he is still a bit colicly, so we use dentinox colic drops in his feed a couple of times a day and that seems to help.

Colic does pass though and some are just more colicly than others. Best of luck and I hope you find something that works for your ds. Smile

jo789, this may not be an option for you for whatever reason, but is going back to breastfeeding something you might consider?

I think it's important to raise this, just in case it's something no one has suggested before.
