When to worry about baby not feeding?

He's 6 weeks old. Last decent feed was about 8pm yesterday. Didn't feed properly when I tried at 11ish or when he woke at 2.30am (just wanted to play). He woke at 6.30am, had a few sucks and back to sleep.

I'll wake him in a minute to try again. Should I be worried?

Normally has been feeding once or twice between 11pm and 7am.

He was easy to wake but still won't feed. Latched on for minute maybe, but that was half hearted. Turns away from the breast and clamps his mouth shut. Happy and smiling. Should I do anything?

my 3rd child did this, i think at roughly the same age. didn't feed at all for nearly 24 hours.
absolutely no idea why, but all of a sudden started feeding again and never did it again.
was v. weird!

Have you had any success belindarose?

crikeybadger · 17/08/2012 09:09

Oh sorry- missed your previous post. What about just keeping him skin to skin for a bit?

belindarose · 17/08/2012 09:20

Thanks. He just had another tiny feed while skin to skin. He is very happy, just wants to look at me. Our GP is very good. I'll give him a ring if we don't get a proper feed before lunchtime.

We have a GP appt at 3pm. He's had one short feed just now. Has been awake all morning - quiet and cuddly but smiling still. DD has had a virus with high temperature and no appetite (she's just started eating after a week). Maybe it's the same thing.

Can you try whilst asleep or half asleep?

neontetra · 17/08/2012 13:53

When my dd has a mini nursing strike, using different positions to bf, especially ones which allow her to root to find the nipple rather than me shoving it in her mouth as usual, often help. Also feeding in a darkened room with no distractions. It's stressful though, isn't it? Good luck.

I've tried while half asleep - he just gets angry with me! I'll try to spend the evening skin to skin - toddler dd to look after here too, so not much chance for distraction free feeds. However, he didn't take the opportunity for those last night anyway.

He fed all evening and most of the night. I knew I'd soon be complaining about feeding too much!

Ha! Just keeping you on your toes then Smile

Hope you get a bit of rest soon.
