Will I EVER get another period?!

DS is 15 months, pretty much still EBF except a bit of soya with his cereal (CMPI) and the odd tot during the day when i am at work (4 days a week). I know breastfeeding can slow the return of periods, but should it be this long?! I'm 39, so wondering if its age related? I also got night sweats very regularly for the first year, but these have eased off thankfully.

Was planning to carry on BF DS til he's 2 if I can (unless he self-weans of course) but if we want to try for child no.2 going to have to have a period!

Mine came back at 17mo with DC1 - it was quite a shock when it actually happened! DC2 is now 13mo and no sign so far.

Thanks Columbo, did you drop feeds around that time or did they just return apropos of nothing? I should add I'm absolutely not missing them, mind!

Mine only came back 2 months after I stopped bf ing. I'm 33. I dropped a feed a day over the course of 5 weeks when I was stopping.

Period arrived the morning of my best friends wedding, luckily I'd been carrying "in case of anyone being caught short" sanpro in my bridesmaids bag!

Good luck with TTC Smile

I'm 33 and dd2 was 17 months when my periods came back. I managed to get pg before she turned 2 (was 8 weeks pg on her 2nd birthday), it ended in mc but I'm absolutely positive that still bf dd2 was nothing at all to do with that. You can definitely get pg while still bf and you will probably get your periods back at some point in the next couple of months.

I'm 33 (today) and feeding DS at 17 months and still have no periods. I have the terrible hormonal acne which I think means they should be here any day but it's been like this for 2 months.

I'm a bit worried the haven't returned but at the same time kinda grateful.

The recorded range is 4/6 weeks (depending on which source you read) and 42 months. Shock It varies a lot between women, and can do between children for the same woman. I've never read that age is a factor.

Mine returned at 22.5 months post partum. DS was feeding 7 or 8 times a day and 1-3 times at night then. I was 33.

At 13 months he went on a partial nursing strike for a fortnight, dropping to just 2 feeds per 24 hours. I had a week or so of terrible period-type cramping, which I think was my body gearing up to resume menstruation. When DS resumed normal feeding, it gave up again. :)

We ummed and ah'ed about trying to cut down feeds as I wanted to get pg again. In the end it was always more effort than carrying on, and I got pg on my second cycle when DS was just over 2 y.o. I'm pleased now, as I didn't have to fight DS to reduce feeds, and I think the gap between our DC will work really well for us.

Some people find that night weaning can help periods return.

There's useful info on Kellymom.

I stopped feeding at 12 months and my periods started again at 15 months, so 3 months after I stopped feeding.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/08/2012 11:43

Mine returned at around 18 months both times.

Faverolles · 15/08/2012 11:47

Ds3 is nearly 19m, and still no sign.
Thank you for this thread, I was starting to worry :)

Listmaker · 15/08/2012 11:51

Mine returned at 12 months but I was still feeding dd1 at the time and carried out feeding her until dd2 (born 2 years after dd1) was one! So you don't have to stop bf to get periods back.....

BakingBunty · 15/08/2012 13:23

Mine returned when DS was 11 months, just a couple of weeks ago. He stopped feeding at night about six weeks ago and has three feeds during the day. Getting a period was such a shock! Although it shouldn't have been.

Also noticed that I've started gaining weight since cutting down on feeding. Dammit, was enjoying ploughing through enormous quantities of cake!

Hi - sorry have been away. I think by then he was just on the bedtime feed but had been for a while. I fell pregnant very easily when he was 2 years old - within just two months of trying.

Taranta · 15/08/2012 20:21

Sorry i've been working/dealing with a terrible teething episode here, but thanks for all your replies. Like you Faverolles I'm relieved to know its not all that uncommon, though 42 months sounds pretty epic.
Angeldog I've had a couple of bouts of bad PMT stuff too, when DS has been erratic with his feeding and thought 'its in the post' but then nothing - have thought of night weaning but to be honest DS still wakes at least once a night and its the only solution to feed him tp get him to go back to sleep when i have to work the next day, I'd much rather he decided when to stop...
As for TTC, well, got a lot more work to do on DH to convince him DC2 might not be the sleep depriver DC1 has been, and that might take a while. So I guess I should enjoy not having periods them while i still can, eh? Smile
