If formula is now so close to breastmilk...

why is it that when I gave some to my 4 month old baby girl, the dribbles from the milk down her chin turned her chin into red splotches a few minutes later? This never happens with breastmilk or regurgitated breast milk:)

Tried some on her as listened to a silly person who tried to tell me she wasn't getting enough calories. Will give up now though as she also started retching when I gave it to her (discerning palate already, eh?)

Also, can someone please tell me whether it is fine to exclusively b-feed from 6-12 months alongside weaning (ie. no follow-on milk). Someone else told me you need the fo milk for the iron. As my little girl hates it so much was hoping to get away with just the breastfeeding until 12 months.

And I'm not knocking bottle feeding mums, I have loads of friends who bottle feed (disclaimerWink

ypou do not need follow on milk, breatmilk is fine alongside weaning. dd3 is 12monthsa and still loves her breastmilk. she has between 3-6feeds a day as well as quick snacks, eats 3 meals a daym, drink water from a cup.

Sounds more like an allergy rather than a discerning palate.

thanks ladies, yes I think you could be right yafa, she certainly seems prone to rashes:) I've heard formula can cause allergies. Guess that's all the more reason to stick to the breastfeeding. thanks for the reassurance misdee.

Yep, sounds like cows milk protein allergy which my DD had. I would recommend you take her to the GP to have it confirmed. You need to clarify whether you need to avoid some foods when weaning. You can also get Wysoy (soya milk formula) on prescription from the GP which my DD had (well still has).

It is perfectly fine to exclusively breastfeed - i am doing it now. In fact the WHO recommend b/feeding for the first two years of a baby's life.

my dd was the same, hated the follow on milk and the few bits that did get into her caused alarming blistered nappy rash. turns out she allergic to cow's milk even the tiny amounts in formula.

bf is more than enough alongside reguler solids and if you need to put milk in cereal etc use goats milk. worked for my dd and when i weaned her off the breast at one year she just started drinking goats milk.

Don't worry about the iron thing - she'll be getting enough from you and her solids combined. The follow on milk stuff was invented as a way for formula milk people to advertise their products (they're not allowed to advertise milk for babies under 6 months). Def worth getting your gp to check for a true allergy as this will affect the way you wean her.

bluejelly · 10/03/2006 12:53

Same happened to me, daughter allergic to cow's milk protein, came up in blotches etc
It last till she was about 18 months I think-- now fine

Not even formula-fed babies need follow-on formula! As others have said (and even my HV), it's nothing but a marketing ploy!
DD will get all the iron she needs from bfing in conjunction with a varied, healthy diet.
