Bf + coilef + baby gaviscon + night feeds = how? Help!

Ds2 is 2 weeks old and diagnosed with reflux after a trip to the out of hours dr last night.

Is there an easy way for administering baby gaviscon and coilef at night when feeding as in my head it feels like its going to be a nightmare!

Can I make up the gaviscon in advance? What about adding coilef to some expressed milk before I go to bed, will it be safe for use when ds wakes for his night feeds? Thanks

Did the doctor recommend the colief? I vaguely remember not being able to add it until the ebm was ready, so it did take a few minutes longer. My DC needed to be wakened for night feeds, so I could do it before waking.

However, we didn't find colief did much good, though it did work a bit. For our DC, Infacol worked better, so long as we used it at every feed. Dentinox also worked, probably better than Infacol, but the hideous taste made it difficult to get into DC. Colocynth granules did nothing for us, nor for DN, and were expensive.

We didn't use gaviscon, so I can't help you there, sorry.

When I gave DS gaviscon I used half the amount of water suggested on the packet as was only giving 1 sachet so seemed to make sense, also less to give. I mixed it with cooled boiled water in an unused urine sample pot and shook it up, a tip I read on here, makes it dissolve quicker. I then gave it with a syringe. I don't think they recommend making it up in advance, but don't quote me on that. HTH

Reflux proper is not really anything to do with lactose and colief (which breaks down lactose) is not usually prescribed for it. It's to do with poor co-ordination of digestive system.

I digress! To sort of answer your original question, nope, gaviscon can't be made in advance because if you add it to expressed milk and leave it in the fridge it will go like custard after a few hours.

I think you could add colief before going to bed tho as it needs a minimum of 30 minutes to work and break down the lactase.

If I were you I would go back and see your regular GP for another chat about the reflux. What's the concern health-wise? Is it excessive vomiting?

When my baby was on colief I used to express some milk and store bits in little pots in the fridge. During the night when baby woke for feed, I got my husband to get a pot from the fridge, warm it slightly to body temp, then add the colief drops and gave to baby through a bottle teat right before he latched on to me.
