Newbie questions on expressing

Hi i have just started trying to express milk for when I need to leave my ds (6 weeks) for very short periods. Can someone tell me if you're allowed to add milk to a container already in the fridge as I'm not getting a huge amount at once yet? ( have pumped this afternoon, can I add more tomorrow morning?) or does each session need to be kept separately iykwim?

Also if he does get hungry when I'm out and takes the bottle should I express as soon as I'm back in so that my boobs realise he would have fed then and supply doesn't decrease?
thank you!

Hi
It's been a while and I'm not too sure about milk that you put in the fridge.
But I donated milk to the milk bank and was told by the milk bank nurse that it was perfectly OK to express and freeze milk and then add new milk to the frozen bottle. I was surprised at the time and queried it but she was sure - I guess if it's OK for babies who are really ill it would be absolutely fine for a healthy baby.
Hope this is helpful.
Well done for expressing so soon - it's hard work and hard to believe how little you get!

It's best to add same temperature milk to same temperature (so chill newly expressed milk before adding it to already chilled milk). You can add chilled milk to frozen though.

If freezing/storing, make sure you label it with the EARLIEST date you expressed (so if some from yesterday, some from today, some from tomorrow, label it with yesterday's date).

You can express when you get in (or even out & about - as annoying as pumping and dumping can be). Lots of good info on the wonderful Kellymom

One thing I always point out because of painful personal experience - some mothers have an excess of lipase in their milk which means when it's stored it tastes soapy. It's perfectly drinkable, won't do LO any harm, but he may not drink it because it frankly tastes awful! You may not have this problem, but do have a quick taste to see if some milk stored for more than 12 hours (or thawed if frozen) tastes ok, as you'll need to heat treat it before storing in future if it is soapy. Again, more on Kellymom about that.

Sorry I did reply last might but it didn't post! Thank you both for the advice, will store separately. That's interesting about the soapy ilk Mombojombo! How strange, will have to hope mine isn't soapy as he may need it at lunch! Crikey this all seems v technical, just when I was starting to get the hang of breastfeeding!
