Breastfeeding and garlic

I had a few slices garlic bread last nught and I think it's affected my 6 month old baby.

She has been screaming since last night, goes to sleep but wakes up after a short time, clearly in pain, bringing knees up, kicking like mad.

She's never been like this before, and even though I never had any problems with my diet with any of my babies (she has a twin brother and two older sisters), I can't help wondering if all her discomfort is caused by the garlic?

Her brother is fine but he had less of my milk ( they are mix fed).

Anyone had something similar? I am now feeling massively guilty and reluctant to feed her to soothe her as worried I would cause more pain... But when can I safely feed her again then?

Thanks in advance!

Could it be teething?

It's unlikely the milk will cause pain. Food tastes do pass through in to your milk but not in quantities that it'll cause this type of reaction.

Perhaps try some calpol to rule out pain due to teeth? DD started teething at around 13 weeks. Just random cries of pain. First tooth didn't cut until she was 6 months.

If she has a bit of trapped wind, baby massage might help.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I dont think it is teething, but I could be wrong!

I'm at my mums and stupidly didnt bring any calopol with me, but they've necer needed it in 6 months.

She eventually went to sleep at 6am and am now feeding her. Fingers x it was all just a one off.

Thanks again though

I had this with DS1 - garlic made him windy and sometime he had green poo the next day. Also lettuce (mostly iceberg) did the same thing.

As he dropped feeds it got better and didn't happen as much and eventually not at all - most likely it was better due to him being older and his system being more mature and able to handle things.

Just as well given how long he continue to feed for - couldn't have avoided salad and garlic for nearly three years.

Now on DS2 and avoiding things again.

Thanks everybody!

Good to hear other people's experiences, and that others have seen similar.

Despite having had very little sleep she's all chatty and smiley this morning, wish I could say the same for me!

But I do think I'll give raw garlic a wide berth from now on, we'll have enough with colds and illnesses, don't need to add self-inflicted ones too!
